Thirsty Thursday ~ Italian Amaretto Margarita

Have you had the Olive Garden’s Italian Margarita?  When I worked in banking, me and my girlfriends would frequent the Olive Garden for dinner and always drank these tasty drinks.  They are unlike any other “regular” margarita.  At the Olive Garden, they serve the Amaretto in a pretty shot glass on the side.  I have a few of them in my cupboard.  I just don’t remember how on earth they got there.

Anyhow.  I went searching for the recipe so I could try this at home.  I found several promising recipes and narrowed it down to these.  Of course, the Olive Garden doesn’t share the actual recipe, but according the the listed ingredients, this one looks really close:

Italian Margarita Recipe from Drinks Mixer

1 oz amaretto almond liqueur
2 oz sweet and sour mix
1/2 oz Jose Cuervo® Especial gold tequila
1/2 oz triple sec
Pour into a margarita glass, stir, and add ice cubes.
But then there is this version, which in the comments, several folks raved that they tasted “just like” the Olive Garden drink.  So I thought I would share it, too and you can decide which to try.
Italian Amaretto Margarita Recipe from All Recipes

4 oz amaretto liqueur, plus additional white sugar
6 oz frozen limeade concentrate
6 oz tequila
1/2 cup orange juice
6 cups ice

Dip the rims of 4 margarita glasses in amaretto, then into sugar; set aside. Pour the limeaid, tequila, amaretto, orange juice, and ice into the bowl of a blender. Puree until smooth, then pour into prepared glasses.

That sounds great — never had a margarita with amaretto before, but I’ll be sure to try it soon. Margarita season approaches! :-)

Just FYI: the second recipe is probably it as the bartender told me the omit the sweet and sour mix and replace it with orange juice….so according to bartender who made mine at Olive Garden no sweet and sour mix…..I love them as well…only margarita I like….thought it was the tequila I did not like but apparently it is the sweet and sour mix I hate….everyone must try one….

ooohh…Insider information! Thanks so much for the tip! I found the 2nd recipe tasted much better than the 1st anyways. That must be why. :)
