Right now there is a big Brew-Ha-Ha stewing over an “Illegal Alien” Halloween Costume.
It’s an Alien wearing what is perceived to be “prison” garb carrying a fake “green card.” According to CNN’s story (linked above):
Immigrant rights activists are calling on U.S. retailers to stop selling two controversial “Illegal Alien” costumes that have surfaced for Halloween, saying the outfits are a broadside attack on illegal immigrants.
Seriously?
I thought that as an adult, everything about Halloween was intended to be a “broadside attack” against something. It’s what we do. It’s FUNNY.
Isn’t the “pregnant nun” an attack on Catholics?
Poking fun at fat people?
This one shocks the hell out of me! But is it funny? Yeah…maybe.
ETA: I was never a victim of such an awful thing but I see where this can be really offensive to a lot of people. So why hasn’t it been pulled off the market? I think it’s much more offensive than the Illegal Alien.
This one is totally making fun of the Indian culture and their magic genies.
So really, people. Lighten up! It’s Halloween.
I don’t go out of my way to offend people at all. I personally, would never wear any of these costumes, but I can certainly see the humor in them. Halloween is not about being politically correct. It’s about being wild and outrageous. Making a statement, whether it’s political or otherwise. Face it, there are a lot of people in this country that feel strongly about the illegal immigrant problem and this is them making a statement.
Soooo….what do you think? Offensive? Funny? Tacky? Do you think it’s a big deal or are the “PC” activists going a little crazy? I really want to know because I want to know if my friends also have a warped sense of humor like me.
I agree with you 100%. We saw this on the news last night and thought it was pretty funny. I don’t get why people are so upset over it. Its not like the mask looks like someone of a certain race or ethnicity, its just a darn alien. Lighten up people!
Personally, I am offended by the Catholic priest costume. Not only because I’m Catholic, but because there were so many innocent children hurt by what happened. I find no humor in that at all.
I completely agree that it’s a shocking and tacky costume. Really I do. When I first came across it I was taken aback and thought it crossed the line. But I haven’t seen any news stories of the Catholic Church wanting that costume taken out of stores.

I think it’s a little bit of all. It’s tacky, funny, and appalling all at the same time. But like you said it’s Halloween. People should take ti in the spirit it was intended even if it’s not their cup of tea.
I think the illegal alien one is hilarious. I think they need to lighten up! I definitely think the catholic priest one went over the line though. That could really upset people who have been molested or made to do things as kids. But halloween costumes are made to poke fun and there is something making fun of everyone or every group.
i myself was an illegal alien for about a day before i married my husband and i take no offence, lol! that priest costume however….disgusting.

I thought it was funny when my dad told me about the whole incident. You can make fun of any white person, but no one can poke fun at any other race or your a racist. It’s silly!
The one that shocked me the most was the priest/kid. Kinda funny, but made me do a shocked inhale! It’s for Halloween, for fun. The genie didn’t make me think on Indians, it made me laugh at a guy wanting his “lamp” rubbed!

Freaking hilarious. the Catholic Priest one is a bit over the line but I am not offended by it. Actually, at first I just thought it was a child holding onto their parent, I had to do a double take to “get it”.
I think the illegal alien is hilarious! The ACLU and all those “offended” people out there really chap my hide. Political correctness is ending any fun we ever have. It is a disease, a virus of pandemic proportions.
The priest one does cross the line a bit, but I also wouldn’t buy it, so that solves the problem for me.

I have seen waaaay more offensive costumes that the alien–like that priest one for example!!!!—and more offensive everyday clothes, tshirts, etc. Give it up PC people; you can’t sensor EVERYTHING. When I was in high school “Big Johnson” tshirts were extremely popular and in my opinion, offensive. Here’s what I did to protest them: ignored them and the idiots wearing them and didn’t waste my money on them. Guess what? They went away.
Anyway, there’s plenty of real things in this world to b*tch about than a costume, in my opinion.

Ok I have to say that I do find the alien one offensive. I understand why people are upset over it but c’mon…in my opinion Halloween is about dressing up and having fun….not offending people.
The priest one makes me completely sick and I think it should be pulled off the market…it’s terrible! Terrible doesn’t even cut it….I have no words to describe how much that one offends me and makes me want to puke.
The nun one as well I find offensive. And I can’t believe there hasn’t been any controversy over either one of them. You’ll *never* see me or any of my family members ever wearing any of those ‘costumes’.
I think the priest one is hilarious. Its a joke and its funny, why don’t people get more up in arms over a sexual predator story involving a priest rather than a stupid costume.
okay the priest one was bad. i don’t think that’s funny at all. that is rather offensive and not appropriate. but i like the other ones, especially the alien one! lol
