Shaving Just Isn’t In My Budget

I started giving myself $100.00 a week to buy groceries and the last 2 weeks we made it through.  SO proud of myself!  I tried some new recipes and some new techniques and am really pleased with how it’s going.  Now tomorrow, is shopping day.

Do you want to know what’s on my list of things to get?

Razors.

Razors are SO freaking expensive that I don’t want to buy them.  At my local grocery store, they are $10.99 for a 4-pack of my Venus Razor blades.  that’s more than $2.50 each.

WHY?

Why are razors so expensive?  I really don’t get it?

Bob’s razors run $18-20 a pack.

RIDICULOUS!

I would have to get at least eight razors to make it through the next 2 weeks.  that’s more than $20.00 out of my $200.00 budget.  Wasted.  I could spend $20.00 on so many better things.  Like chocolate ice cream or chicken.  Things that are necessary to survive.

I don’t need razors.

Heck, I’m thinking of following in Golden Globe winner Mo’Nique’s footsteps.  She doesn’t waste her money on razors and she’s a beautiful award winning actress.

What do you think?

I don’t know if I could pull it off.

But really, in all honesty, how do you shave your legs when you are on a budget?  Is there a secret shopping place for razors that I don’t know about?  Do all thrifty gals use electric razors instead?  I’ve never really liked the results of an electric shave, but I guess at this point maybe it’s worth trying.  I could buy a decent electric shaver for the same freaking price as 2 packs of Venus.  What’s a wannabe thrifty gal to do?

I totally feel your pain. I love Venus Breeze razors and last year I stocked up when Walgreens had a special but now I have none. I have not shaved my legs all winter long. Gross.

    • mommy23monkeys says:

I’ve tried using coupons paired with sales but I am so particular with my razor brand. I like Venus, too. Usually coupons are for disposables that I don’t like.
      *sigh*

  2. Eeek what the is she thinking that’s so gross.
Now I don’t shave every week but then my hair doesn’t really grow on my legs so it doesn’t get bad either.
Now my air pits that’s another story. Ever try an electric shaver on the legs.

I usually use hubby’s razor. lol

    • mommy23monkeys says:

It IS gross, isn’t it?? LMAO!

I’ve used DH’s razors before but he’s out, too so that doesn’t help me now.

You are so lucky that you don’t have much hair. My boys will ask me the day after shaving why my legs are so hairy. LOL!

  3. Jayme says:

I use the Intuition ones, so at least I’m not buying shave gel anymore as well… at least not for me. But my husband has these super expensive blades for his razor and then uses expensive sensitive shave gel because his face reacts so much to shaving daily- but being a Marine he has to. It’s SO expensive to be hairless!

  4. Cat says:

Ha. My legs looked like that last week. I’m so lazy about shaving in the winter. But seriously, you’re getting ripped off.

I buy razor blade refills at Walmart for $10, each blade lasts a month.

  5. Courtney says:

I don’t remember the last time I bought a razor. I got a crap load last year for really cheap with coupons. Whenever there’s a good coupon for a free item or cheap I use it! :)

  6. Heather says:

I live in Canada…it’s cold. Nuff said :) Plus I”m very fair haired in the leg region so it’s not a big deal really. Just go au natural!

Works for Mo’nique, works for me, plus it’s in line with your no poo eco natural new ways ;)

    • mommy23monkeys says:

It does go with my new hippy lifestyle doesn’t it? LOL I don’t know if my husband would be so receptive though.

  7. Staci A says:

Wow…that pic is so gross! I was lucky to stockpile a ton of Venus replacement heads for 50 cents a pack when hubby’s work was selling “damaged goods.” And only the shipping boxes were really damaged.

Usually though, I check the Dollar Store or discounts stores and just cross my fingers.

  8. Honestly? The generic razors at Wal-Mart (can’t think of brand but they are purple and purple packaging as well) last me soooo much longer than Venus Razors EVER have. And I am very picky about hair. I shave everyday. And now that I’m in school for Esthetics, we are always picking on ourselves. Have you thought about waxing your legs? If you keep up with appointments, your hair seriously starts to come in thinner and longer as you go on. Just a random thought ;)

    • mommy23monkeys says:

Are these the $10 ones Cat is talking about? If they are better than the Venus then I will for sure check them out.

I’ve always been afraid of waxing my legs. It took me till I was 36yo to wax my eyebrows! Doesn’t it hurt like hell?

      • I just went and grabbed my pack. They are Personna Brand. Speed3 for Women. I pay like 5 or 6 bucks for a pack of 6 and seriously, these disposable razors last me so much longer than a Venus Razor ever has.

I actually wax my arms all the time now just because. With my big tattoo on my arm, you have to shave it for it to be tattooed so I got used to the bare arm feeling. Honestly, I laugh when I get waxed! Now I have a friend that’s been doing Brazilian waxes (yes, I know. A WHOLE OTHER STORY) The first time, she was ready to jump off the table. She’s going on her fourth appointment now, the hair is growing in soooo sparse and she barely flinches.

        • mommy23monkeys says:

Well, I think I”ll check out those walmart razors then and I’ll think about waxing a bit longer…not sure if I”m ready for that. Thanks for checking on the brand name of those cheapees!

  9. lisa p says:

hahahahh I dont worry about it in the winter BUT my razors are expensive too so I stock way up when on sale and make those bad boys last

  10. Kim says:

I know what you mean! I’ve been using the same razor for about a month now-I like the one with the trimmer on the other end but I can’t think of the brand! And, to make them last, I buy the mens blades for it.

  11. Lee says:

I use the old fashioned Daisy razors. You know, the disposable ones that are pink with the little flowers. I’ve tried all the fancy ones. The ones that have a built in shaving cream block always get used up so fast, well before the razor goes bad. Then the fancy Venus ones are great, but so expensive. I love my Daisy’s. Can’t live without em. I use a new one every two weeks probably. I shave my pits every day and my legs at least 2 times a week.

Oh and when I get brazilians I also laugh. Something about being so ticklish my body can’t decide if it is pleasure or pain.

    Lee

  12. nicole says:

I used to use the Venus ones but found they didn’t last as long as my husbands’ so I use a mans razor blade either Mach 3 or I think some orange Gillette one. They work better on all the places I want to shave. I’d check the manufacturers website-they may have a coupon you can print off.

  13. Mens shick razors are the ONLY ones that don’t give me razor burn and the only ones I can use. They are only $7.99 for a pack of 10.

  14. Katie says:

Rhea if you live someplace cold, like wisconsin…your body is covered in clothing 9 months out of the year…making shaving completely affordable!!! heheee…I”d try the dollar store. See if they have something similiar to venus…buy one pack to be sure you like them. Otherwise…I always only bought when I had coupons too..and I use my razors until they are scraping skin off along with the hair! Female hair…just isn’t right!!!

  15. I haven’t shaved my legs all winter either. I think my husband is starting to get grossed out! LOL I’ve thought of getting laser hair removal treamtments but I’ve heard they may not work the first time and are expensive. It would be SO nice to never have to shave again though!

  16. Tiffany says:

I use disposables and they are usually much cheaper. It does seem like a lot of wasted money. I really want to have laser hair removal someday, it would be nice just not to have to worry about it. And I don’t think I could let my leg hair grow out either….*shudder* I’m the type that has to shave every time I get in the shower or I don’t feel completely clean.

  17. trisha says:

DH gets a big pack of razors and i use them out of there when i need them. I rarely need to share though. I have very very light blonde hair and it grows so slow that maybe once a montH? Maybe. Maybe every 2 months

  18. lorrie says:

I just get the cheap double packs of daisys which is like 5 or under. I make those lsat for at least a month

  19. Ok, I seriously have not paid more than $2 for nice razors in a LONG time. You just need to use coupons and shopper loyalty cards with the sales at CVS and Walgreens and you won’t pay that much ever again.

I have sooo many razors in my bathroom closet, I have actually given some away! I am not talking cheapies – Fusion, Venus Embrace, Bic Soleil, Schick Quatro etc.

Just check out the coupon match ups and we will help you find cheap razors! Please don’t shop shaving – Ewwww, LOL!

    Kitty

  20. Jammie says:

I buy a pack of bic for my husband and I use his and his shaving cream.

  21. Stefani says:

I am one that uses disposable razors too because I don’t want to pay the high price for the good ones. If you pay attention to the Walgreens/CVS/Rite Aid coupon/sale matchups, you can get them free sometimes.

  22. Rachael says:

I use the coupons and sales. I also have decided I like my husband’s Gillette razors more than any other kind and they last longer. I never ever pay more than $.99 for a razor and most of the time they are free. I have given away more razors than I can count and they sure aren’t the disposables.

  23. Sabrina says:

Well right off the bat, one thing I do that it seems you don’t do is USE UP my razors. Each disposable razor will spend at least a week-10 days in my shower before I need to change to a new one, and I’m a hairy gal that has to shave daily. I use 2-ish a month, so the average 4-pack lasts me at least 2 months. Also, what brand are you getting? If I remember in time, I try to e-bay for these kids of things. Saves a bundle, even with the shipping charges.

  24. Kimberly says:

Wow, so many comments about affordable shaving…must be near and dear to our hearts LOL ;-) I buy the BIC Comfort 3 disposables at Sam’s. It’s something like $15 for 40 razors. For 35-40 cents a razor, I don’t feel bad about only using one two or maybe three times before ditching it. Not exactly eco-friendly, but they’re budget friendly ;-)

    • mommy23monkeys says:

oh, that’s not a bad price and I just happen to shop at Sam’s…LOL

I’ll have to look. I got some Daisy’s today. They were less than $5 for a 5 pack, but your price is even better. I’ll have to look when I go down there again. Thanks. :)

  25. claire says:

Please don’t follow in her foot steps unless you take pictures. LOL
    Eek. I couldnt do it!!
I left a comment on the mom dot, but I’ll add here.
Coupons!! And grocery stores ALWAYS over price razors & HB items. Walgreens or CVS, if you learn to coupon them, I know people who get paid to buy razors at those places!!
I cant figure it out, but, some do!!
Look into it, don’t go rogue & get all wilderbeast!! ;-)

    • mommy23monkeys says:

I TRIED coupning, but I suck at it. I guess I’m just gonna have to keep an eye out for these ones though because it’s really gonna screw my budget up.

You don’t think I could do an amazon hairy leg series along with my no shampooing series?? I would have to change my blog name to reflect hippiness. LOL

  26. I buy the generic Daisy kind or what’s on sale and hubby and I use the same kind – so what if it’s pink or blue, it’s a razor. So we don’t have to buy “his” and “hers” and we can get what’s on sale.

    I don’t think I ever pay more than $8 for a 12 pack.

DO NOT GO the Mo’nique route…that’s nasty! What was she thinking?!

  27. Lauralee Hensley says:

I only have to shave once a week. I barely have any hair on my legs, and it’s blond at that. I actually have more hair in the axillary region and it’s darker there, but still only have to shave once a week, and the razor will last me about three or four weeks at that.
I think it’s because I have a couple of different American Indian ancestery bloodlines in me, besides alot of English, Swedish, Dutch, etc., in me. I can get away with the cheap bic shavers.
Hubby gets the triple blade disposables, but even he can use one of those for a full seven days.
Maybe it would be cheaper in the long run to use the spray on gels that are suppose to get rid of hair and keep you looking clean shaven for a week or so. I don’t know if they really work or not though.

  28. Andrea H says:

I normally buy the double blade disposables. I think they are made by Schick. Never have had any luck with the Daisy’s.

    Good luck!

  29. renee says:

Thanks for the picture–I’m going to go have nightmares now…. :)

  30. Firefly says:

LOL see this is where I get so paranoid LOL I even wrote about it on my site (10 Things You Didn’t Know About Me) ;) I get this feeling that if my legs are not shaved everyone can see it even if I’m wearing pants LOL soooo you can imagine the shaving involved LMAO. But I do use some from Hubby LOL even though he uses electric one, I still don’t get why he gets the disposable ones too???

  31. shari says:

I usually get my razors in bulk at Costco so I don’t have to deal with finding coupons, etc. I guess one of the downsides to living in San Diego is having to shave through winter–like today I wore a dress because it was so beautiful out!

    • mommy23monkeys says:

Last time I was at Costco, this is what I did. I don’t remember what they cost, but they lasted me a long time so it wasn’t so bad.

Wasn’t the weather great?? We were outside all day. I loved it!

  32. Julie Bianchi says:

I buy the cheap pink razors too that you can get at any store (sometimes their right next to the check-out stand). I bought a pack of 10 about a year ago and I am just now on my last one! I just can’t see spending a fortune on razors either. The only problem I’m having now is that my 12 year old son, who just KNOWS he’s going thru puberty, has been using my razors in the shower to shave “down there” because he thinks it will make the hair grow in faster!! The only reason I found this out was because I noticed my razor was not in it’s usual spot on top of the shower anymore and also because I ran out of them faster than normal. KIDS! But seriously, if you are getting razor bumps it’s usually because you’re shaving TOO MUCH and TOO OFTEN. I noticed if I just shaved twice a week in winter and two or three times in summer, it really helps with the razor bumps.

    • mommy23monkeys says:

OMGosh Julie! That is SO funny! Where do kids get these ideas?? Doesn’t he realize that the hair will be there forever and he’ll be sick of it soon enough? LOL!

  33. Clay Steiner (aka WriterDude) says:

I stumbled across your blog, read this post (I’ll bet you can guess the other one I’ve read) and thought I’d share something else I stumbled across the other day. I have yet to try this, so I can’t testify to its effectiveness. But this guy claims he’s gone eight months on the same Gillette Fusion razor cartridge — hope you find it useful:

    http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/02/how-to-drastically-increase-the-life-of-your-shaver-razor-blade-cartridges-or-disposable-razors/

    • mommy23monkeys says:

Thanks for that link! I think I’m gonna try it, sounds easy enough so there is nothing to lose, huh? :)

      • Clay Steiner (aka WriterDude) says:

My thought exactly, Rhea. While I have a Norelco for the face, I suspect it may be dying. This could turn out to be handy info to have. Never mind that it could be useful otherwise in, um — well, insert “manscaping” joke here.

  34. Clay Steiner (aka WriterDude) says:

Hi — tried to post a (hopefully) helpful comment but it seems to have disappeared, possibly sent to your sp@m dump because it contained a link, and I’m not seeing anything like “held for moderation”. So please be advised; I’m not a big fan of wasting my time on comments that go “poof”.

  35. jodi says:

i have not paid more than $1.00 for name brand razors in a long time. I use coupons and only get them from cvs-when they have a high amount on the ECB’s back or walgreens when they have a high Register Reward.

  36. Sara says:

The price of razors are ridiculous! I used to get disposables but it seems like I had a lot of cuts & bad razor burn from it. My mom got me on Schick Personal Touch from Wal-Mart. They are pretty reasonably priced. I can’t remember how much the actual razor costs but the heads are four for around $6-7. I love them!

  37. I love my Venus razors too, but I don’t pay more then $2.00 for them. I LOVE shopping the weekly store sales at CVS and Walgreens, and when they go on sale I use my coupons and stock up for a few weeks. If you don’t already shop these stores you should. :) They’re great.

    Take care,
    Shynea
