Getting Enough Training In

I have been really proud of  myself and am right on target with my 3 Day walk training.  I am 21 weeks out from the San Diego walk and this week I should be doing 3-5 miles at a time.  Last night I did nearly 3 miles (we lost track of the lap count…I really need a pedometer).  This morning I wanted to go and do a 5 miles walk.  My farthest yet.  But here I sit blogging instead.

The problem comes from my husbands work/sleep schedule.  He works nights and sleeps all day.  He was actually off work last night but because of his opposite sleep schedule, he was still up all night and therefor slept in late this morning.   Past the time where I should have set out on my walk.

Now, I could head out now, but it’s set to be really hot out there.

But really, as my walks get longer and longer and the summer gets hotter and hotter…the heat will be unavoidable.

So how do you schedule your training?  Amongst children, husbands odd schedules, jobs (if you have one).  How do you do it?  I don’t need an “excuse” to not get my walk in.  For you experienced walkers out there…how do you make it work to ensure your 3 day success?

don’t have an answer to your problem, sorry. But wanted to get out my pom poms for you and cheer you on with this! Keep at it, it will come together!

Get up earlier and go out earlier in the day (I try to get out by 7am, and will probably go out even earlier as it gets hotter), or late at night (wear reflective clothing!) and always always always stay hydrated. You are doing awesome! I wish I could join you!

DH gets home at 7:30am. I wish I could get out before that but I can’t. That’s still not terrible I guess though. And I live rural, no lights after dark. I guess I could head down to main street and walk back and forth…hey, that’s not a bad idea. It just came to me. lol

Good for you on getting your training in!

I have the same issues, I cannot find time to get in my favorite exercise. I love to bike ride, but my little kids hate the bike trailer (and @ almost 40 lbs each it isn’t really safe anymore), and they are too slow on their own bikes. My husband leaves for work at 6:30 in the morning and gets back at 9pm, so early mornings and late evenings are out because it is too dark at those times. I’m interested to see what others say…but keep up the great work!

Are there stores within your distance that you can walk to from home? I used to load up the youngest in a stroller and walk to Target, walk the aisles, then walk home. Being on foot limited how much money I could spend too ;-) A pool or splashpad you can walk to instead of driving to? Even just parking at the back of parking lots instead of close to the store can help. You can go to the mall and walk laps in the air conditioning. Those are my best suggestions….. I find my girls are good for about 2-3 miles on hikes and walks before they start complaining. Longer than that and they go in the stroller. I trained for a half-marathon over the summer in Texas one year, but I like the heat and we still did early morning runs. On the longest run days when we were out for 2 or 3 hours, we were bound to run into some pretty high temps, it’s just part of it—-be sure to drink enough fluid to make up for all the sweating you do and take a cold shower when you get home to cool off!!!

Thanks Kimberly. Actually, you give me a good idea. I can head down to main street and walk back and forth. I’ll go clock it today but it’s gotta be good for a couple miles at least. And it’s lighted and not all dark and rural like my neighborhood.

I will say a couple of things regarding this: First, don’t beat yourself up if you can’t do exactly what the suggested training is. While it would be great if you could, I have walked three walks in the past and have yet to do that. In fact, most of my walking is left to the weekends because of scheduling. I work during the week at a regular job, but when I come home I want to hang out with the family. I don’t get to see them at work, so I would like to spend the time with them that I can. I try to do the maximum of mileage for the week on the weekend. So for instance, if the suggested mileage said to walk the following miles on certain days: 4,5,6,10,3 then I would make sure that on at least one day I would walk 10 miles. If I had two days that I could walk, I would also tackle the 6.

Ok, second, I try to use my walks efficiently. For instance, a few weeks ago, I walked with the kids up to the ice cream store. It was blazing hot out and not terribly comfortable to be in, but we walked two miles round trip with an AC break (plus ice cream if you want it) in the middle. It’s ok if you don’t get the full mileage on these, just getting out and walking and working on those calluses is the big thing.

Thank you John! It’s great to hear it from an experienced walker since this is my 1st one. I’m all freaked out that if I don’t do my training as scheduled that I am going to DIE! LOL

Do what you can. Definitely the more you walk the better you will feel, but it can be done with less. Last year I met a woman who signed up a week before the Dallas walk and she did it with no training. She was fit and played tennis and she made it all 60 miles, but she said that next year she would definitely be training.

Rhea I have to “schedule” my workout time. I honestly write it into my day. It is hard…There is no way on Gods green earth that I am getting up any earlier than the 5 am I already do!!! I’d say head out as soon as Bob gets home. It’s still cool enough…and he’s there for the kids yet. Could your Mom or Dad watch them later at night? What time do they go to bed? I usually get K down at 8 and then that’s my time. I live in the boonies…and often have to yell at noises in the woods were I walk so nothing comes out and eats me…but I SO need that time. OR you could try some of the Leslie Sansone walking tapes. I love them…they are 1,2, 3, and 4 mile tapes. They are perfect for rainy or hot and humid days. PLUS you can do them in your own livingroom. They are really simple walking in place, leg lifts, kicks and side steps with some arm movement. I honestly think they get me going even more than my walks. They’re a good mix up too!
