Like all kids, my boys LOVE carbonated sodas. Like all moms, I try and convince them to drink anything but. Especially lately with our trying to cut out all the junk that the kids eat, it was nice to find a great alternative.
Introducing the new Juicy Juice Sparkling Fruit Juice.
I was really excited to be offered the chance to try these new all-natural, lightly carbonated drinks. There are currently three flavors: Apple, orange and berry. All three contain a whole serving of fruit! The cans are designed to be colorful, fun and be a perfect fit in a young child’s hand. The best part is that they have less sugar than regular Juice Juice (and way less sugar than that orange soda!) and my boys liked them just as much.
It was pretty amusing, my boys followed their normal patterns and picked their predicted favorites. Anthony’s was orange, Gabe’s was apple and Nate’s was berry. This mommy’s favorite also happens to be the berry, too. We were so happy with our Sparkling Fruit Juice’s that when our samples were gone, I went to the local grocery store and bought some more.
Our local Alberstons store was selling the 4 packs for around $3.50. I thought this seemed a little expensive for an everyday drink. Lucky for me, my boys drink a lot of water and so I’ll be saving the Sparkling Juice’s for special times or occasional treats. Times when a soda would be appropriate, I will happily hand them this healthier alternative.
Us mommy’s need to be sneaky about getting the healthy stuff into them now don’t we?
I think the Juicy Juice Sparkling Fruit Juice is brilliant and delicious. I wonder if I could convince them to actually make the “all-natural” part organic?
One lucky reader will get a variety 6 pack of this new Sparkling Juice, two of each available flavor, and a Juicy Juice tote bag!

Baked zucchini sticks and baked sweet potato fries are always a hit at my house when I don’t want to serve French fries. Also, water flavored with a squirt of lemon sometimes curbs my daughter’s recent obsession with Sprite.

I have some super picky eaters so I sneak in a lot of healthy stuff in spaghetti, muffins, cakes, etc. We also normally don’t keep soda in the house so water is really their only option when they’re thirsty.

Ooh…my girls have been asking for more sparkling cider ever since Christmas, I bet they’d love this!
I recently discovered that my kids (who won’t eat any form of potato besides a fast food french fry) love cut up potatoes tossed with olive oil and a little garlic powder and baked in the oven. Much better than the fried version!

I get sectioned plates and give my kids their own raw veggie trays with ranch. I give them carrot sticks, broccoli, cucumber and grape tomatos. They love the variety and they eat (almost) all of it. I also sneak spinach into pasta sauce to give pasta a healthier kick and because my kids won’t touch spinach. For movie nights we snack on popcorn with light butter and grapes.

Hi Rhea, I work as a social worker with your mom and have heard about you and the boys over the years. She told me about your cool blogging success which I find fascinating. I decided to make this year my year of getting technologically savvy..by getting a new smart Droid phone with internet and e-mail..WOW! Great fun..and actually getting my computer set up at home and cancelling my old WebTV service. I’m not a mommy, but do have nieces & nephews and kids at work. I will follow your blog from time to time as it seems like you are real perky and upbeat and an honest, fun young woman. How cool you can be a stay-at-home mommy and do this interesting blogging thing. Believe it or not, I’ve never even read anyone’s blog…1st time for everything for us baby boomers. I do want to try to find out about how you liked New Orleans as I went for the N.O. Jazz & Heritage Festival this last May and had a blast. The people were so friendly and helpful…and what an ethnic mix. Hope you love the intriguing variety of cuisine and wroght iron southern style architecture. Have fun!
P.S. I understand you are the “official” blogger for Sam’s Club. I was miffed at them last year in December when I bought a membership with them, then about a week or so later, got a letter saying the store near me (Carlsbad area) was closed…and the nearest was really far away, like Murietta or Spring Valley! I hear they are supposed to be building a new store in the Oceanside area sometime this year. Do you know anything about that? (You can just tell your mom to tell me at work.)
Thanks,
Pam Glover
Eatting veggies does not come easy in our house! My son will eat peas and grean beans, but only after much cajoling. And maybe a few bites of corn on the cob. If I put shredded veggies in meatloaf, he will eat that! jenalber@hotmail.com

I have 5 kids ranging from 28 years old to 12 years old! How blessed I am when they love to pick out the healthy things! I like to incorporate the kids in cooking with me! When doing fresh veggies and dip. I let them pick out the veggies at the store and then we cut the veggies up and I purchase the sour cream on sale and choose the “Lite” version and then let the children choose by the smelling the types of spices they would like to put into the sour cream. They get to experiment by smelling the spices and then tasting to see if there is enough with the spices in the sour cream. I also make mini pizzas using a can of biscuits and separating the biscuits into thinner layers and again letting the children make the sauce by experimenting and smelling the spices they would like in the sauce and then we shred cheese and put a slice of pepperoni on it or top it with fresh diced veggies! They love it and the Hors d”oeuvre lesson has just been taught! It’s also great to do this for a children’s party! then they set up the trays of the Hors d”oeuvres they have made!
I hope that you enjoy this as much as I have over all of these years!

Raw veggies with dip or cooked veggies are a hit at my house, more than canned veggies.

I cut salt, sugar, and fat where I can naturally. For example my son wanted to try Hamburger Helper. I showed him how we can buy the meat, pasta, and seasonings ourselves to make our own without all the additives. I don’t substitute so much as teach about reading labels, what are “sometimes” foods, and serving sizes. At 9, my oldest is starting to get the point that he can have for example, a whole apple or 2 small cookies for a snack based on serving sizes. He knows which one will stick with him longer.

Hi! The kids are always asking ‘What’s for dessert?’ So sometimes I cut a banana in half and put it on a popsicle stick. Then I spread peanut butter over it and place it in the freeze for about 20 to 30 minutes. The kids think it’s a neat treat and I think it’s healthier than sugar filled popsicles!
