The Ridiculous Cost of Special Bikes

My local news had a heartbreaking story of a boy with special needs who had his adaptive bicycle stolen the day after Christmas.  The boy’s family had saved up and gotten the bike for their son as a Christmas present and then some asshole steals it the very next day!  The story both broke my heart and pissed me off.

Then, in an amazing act of generosity, a local businessman stepped up and bought the family another new, $1300 bike for the boy who has Cerebral Palsy, Autism and other disabilities.

It seems that there are still good people in this world!

However, the entire story got me thinking (again) about the subject of “special needs bikes.”  My friend Cheryl wrote a post about it not long ago when she was looking for bikes for her daughter, Jillian.

We were looking through catalogs and chatting about it and I never understood WHY they cost so much money.

The boy in the news story above’s bike only cost $1300.00 but, a look through Adaptivemall.com and you can see that bikes made for these precious children can go as high as $4000.00 (FOUR THOUSAND BUCKS!).

I mean….WHY?

Because the seats are shaped different and they have a few extra nylon strap seat belts?  Because they have straps on the peddles to help steady the feet?  Perhaps it’s the extra brake?

I don’t think these are expensive adaptations.

Do you?

Why should a child with cerebral palsy or another physical disability be screwed out of the freedom of riding a shiny red bike?  I can go to WalMart and buy my kids a “regular” bike for $60.00.  Why does a few extra straps cost thousands more?

I’m so happy that this boy will still get his bike.  The generosity of strangers can still be an amazing thing.  While I try not to focus on the fact that the person who stole the bike is a douche, he is probably just another special needs parent who can’t afford to buy his own damn bike.

Remembering 9/11

The television has been full of personal survivor stories these past few days, I can not help but watch and remember and cry.  Instead of telling you all (again) where I was on on that day, I thought I would share a few stories that I’ve come across in recent days that have touched me.  Which, really let’s face it, all of them touch me.

Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas traveled the US in search of the nearly 100 rescue dogs that worked the tower wreckage in the days following 9/11.  She found 15 still alive and this article has those pictures along with some of their stories.  The book, Retrieved will be released for sale this weekend to commemorate the anniversary.

“When my kids smile, the terrorists lose”

I watched the story of Janet Alonso, who died when the towers fell, on The Today Show this week.  Janet had just returned to work from delivering her son (with Down Syndrome) when 9/11 happened.  The amazing strength of her remaining family and the love that their dad has for the children were amazing to see.  Watch the Video Here (I can not get the embed code to work here…sorry.  But, totally worth the click over to watch).  It was just a reminder that 3000 children lost a parent on that tragic day.

The Twin Towers Movie Cameo History

I was watching Men in Black yesterday with the kids and I noticed the Towers in the background. It’s really something else how many movies feature the iconic view. Filmmaker, Dan Meth made a movie of clips.

If you have a story about September 11th on your website, I would love for you to share it here. God Bless America.

Forgive me for Laughing at the Devastation

Like any good blogger I like to keep track of the search trends on google now and then.  But today, when I went to look and see if there was something to make fun of…well, google made it easy.

Earthquake on the East Coast

Big.Freaking.Deal.

Really.

All of America is googling about a piddly 5.something earthquake on the East Coast?

Welcome to my world!

I live in Southern California where the threat of impending earthquake doom happens every day.  It’s just a little shaking people.  I personally find them exciting!  When my day is boring and nothing is happening, I can count on a little earth shaking to get things going.

I mean, it’s fun bouncing around and catching pictures as they fall of the wall.  Play a game with your kids to see who can catch the most before it’s over.

Why waste a perfectly good earthquake hiding under a table?

Boring.

So, East Coasters, stop worrying about the piddly earth hiccup and prepare for that hurricane that is coming your way.  That’s really more worrisome than this.  Trust me.
