When Surrogacy Lawyers Go Bad

Ya know, I’m not even sure how or where to start this post.  I have been reeling since last night with so many emotions.  I was happily watching America’s Got Talent when a commercial for the 11 o’clock news came on.  I wasn’t even paying that much attention but I hear “Prominent San Diego Attorney Guilty of Selling Babies .”

I glanced up and see MY surrogacy attorney on the TV.  Well that just has to be wrong, I misheard and Theresa must be consulting on the case or something.  I rewind.

Nope.  Not a mistake.  The attorney is Theresa Erickson.  My attorney for two surrogacy journeys plead guilty to selling babies.

OMGWTFBBQ??

I literally felt sick to my stomach.  This is a person I was friendly with.  She did all of my surrogacy contracts and my pre-birth orders.  She had agreed to write a guest post here on my blog (that never came to fruition) and I had hoped at one time to be a contributor to her Erickson Law Blog (no longer a live website).  She is my Facebook friend.  I adore and respect her Senior Paralegal who has helped me many times.  I admired and respected her and her position.  I really wanted to work for her agency helping other surrogates realize their dreams of helping parents create families.

Theresa was tall, beautiful and successful.  She helped many celebrities become parents (Elton John & Michael Jackson were named).  She was well respected in the Family Law and Surrogacy fields.  WHY would she jeopardize it all for this??

United States Attorney Laura E. Duffy announced today that Theresa Erickson entered a guilty plea before United States Magistrate Judge William McCurine, Jr., in which she admitted to being part of a baby-selling ring that deceived the Superior Court of California and prospective parents for unborn babies.  {Continue reading at FBI.gov}

We work really hard trying to show the world that surrogacy is beautiful.  Surrogacy is not a bunch of poor exploited women selling their babies to the highest bidder.  Surrogacy is an amazingly life-changing event and one of the things I am most proud of in my life.  For Theresa to just go along being greedy and tainting something that I love dearly makes me angry.

So VERY angry!

I think I am so sad because of the disappointment.  I trusted Theresa (like so many other surrogates and intended families).  I trusted her with my surro-babes.  I trusted that she was a good person.

I am so disappointed.

Please if you are reading this and you are not familiar with surrogacy, please don’t let this person taint your opinion.  Read through my good surrogacy stories.  Surrogacy is life changing and beautiful.  To see families where there was no hope for one before surrogacy is one of the most amazing things ever.  We are not a bunch of baby-selling greedy assholes like Theresa Erickson.

I found this article interesting about the whole thing if you want to read more.

San Diego Military Family Needs Help!

This cute little cherub faced boy is 16 month old Liam Houck of San Diego.  Specifically, they live right here in my small town of Ramona.  His father is Marine Corps Captain Reid Houck out of MCAS Miramar and his mommy Vanessa left the Air Force to devote her time to little Liam.  Liam is in end stage renal failure due to being born with Eagle Barrett’s Syndrome (Prune Belly Syndrome) and he is in desperate need of a new kidney!

Even with his parents military insurance, they are coming up short on the medical bills.  This seems to be a recurring problem in this country since my cousin Penny is still dealing with the same problem.  The family needs to raise about $50,000.00 to cover medical expenses.  But almost more importantly than that is that they are STILL looking for a compatible kidney.

Here is a little video so you can learn more about Liam:

Please help spread the word of this cutie pie.  He is running out of time.  As a mommy I just can’t imagine what it is like for Vanessa.  If you have a few bucks to spare, you can donate on his COTA page linked below (Children’s Organ Transplant Association).  You can also learn more about him, leave encouraging comments for his family and find out how to help in the search for a kidney.  There is also news about upcoming fund raising events.

This is My Problem With Gay Pride Parades and Festivals

For the record:  I love gay.  I have absolutely no problems with homosexuals, gay’s, fag’s whatever you want to call them.  I have family of that persuasion and I one of my oldest and dearest friends is gay (even he doesn’t like the way “fags” act…he’s words. Not mine).  I adore him and his long time partner.  I think same-sex marriage should be legal.

NO PROBLEMS WITH GAY.

But, I DO have a problem with Gay Pride Parade’s.

I just dont understand why gay pride parade’s and festivals have to be full of near naked gyrating people.  Then they dare to call these “family” events.  There is no way in hell I would ever take my kids to something like that because I don’t need them exposed to SEX.  The costumes are ridiculous!  Or perhaps I should say “lack” of costumes.  And, I don’t think that this behavior really helps their cause, it just makes them look like sexed up idiots.
Really?  You need a GIANT green wiener to demonstrate your pride?  You need to wear your underwear and fairy wings to show your are proud to be gay?  Is this really the way they think it’s best to show the world that homosexual people should be respected?  And you think I want to take my kids out to see it?

Um, no.  I don’t think so.

Why do regular people need to go out and act so inappropriate?  These are business men and women, members of the military, smart and successful.  Parents for goodness sakes.

Gay, straight, alien, what the fuck ever.  Go out into the world and BE PROUD, just put on some clothes and act respectible if you want to be respected.

Support the Spina Bifida Association of Wisconsin and Team Charlie!

I went to high school with Jon.  He was really friends with my then boyfriend, but of course we hung out together, too.  I have memories of driving him home from weddings when he was unable to drive himself *wink*.  We were in the band together and spent many a bus ride together.  He was (I imagine he still is) a great guy.  We lost touch after high school, but the power of Facebook had us being friends again.

I guess it was shortly after we re-friended each other on Facebook that he announced his wife, Amy was expecting another baby.  YAY Babies!  I also remember the status update when he said baby Charlie had Spina Bifida.

Spina Bifida occurs when the spine of the baby fails to close. This creates an opening, or lesion, on the spinal column. Because of the opening on the spinal column, the nerves in the spinal column may be damaged and not work properly. This results in some degree of paralysis. The higher the lesion is on the spinal column, the greater the likelihood of increased paralysis. Surgery to close the spine is generally done within hours after birth. The surgery helps reduce the risk of infection and protects the spinal cord from greater damage. [source: SBAWI.com]

My heart sank for my friend.  Nobody ever wants to hear that their child has a problem and I was heart-broken that Jon and Amy had to endure this.

Charlie is two years old now!  Charlie is adorable{I love the name Charlie}  I love seeing updates and pictures of him getting around and smiling like the rambunctious two year old that he has become.  And now, his family spends a great deal of time and effort into raising money for their local Spina Bifida Association, who was there to help them when they needed it, and continues to help others facing the same diagnosis.

18th Annual Sprint for Spina Bifida

The 18th Annual Sprint for Spina Bifida will take place at Mount Mary College (2900 Menomonee River Parkway, Milwaukee WI) on August 13th, 2011.

  • Wheelchair racers start at 8:55am and walkers and runners start at 9am.
  • Event check-in/registration begins at 7am.
  • Trophies and medals are awarded to race winners.
  • Post event festivities, raffles, awards, and entertainment.

Donate Now to Team Charlie!

If you are not in the Milwaukee Wisconsin area, please consider donating to Team Charlie.  Help raise money for awareness, education and treatment of Spina Bifida.  If you do happen to live in the area, why not head on out to Mount Mary College on August 13th for lots of fun (raffles and entertainment).  If for some reason you can’t do either…PLEASE re-tweet this plea and share on your Facebook pages.  Let us get the word out about Team Charlie and the Spina Bifida Association of Wisconsin.  Thank you!

Douche Canoe of the Week ~ Casey Anthony

OF COURSE Casey is my Douche Canoe of the week!  Who else could it possibly be?

Casey Anthony sucks.  Ok.  Let us pretend that she really didn’t kill her beautiful daughter (I know, it’s hard), why in the world would a mother NOT report her missing child, choosing instead to go out and party it up?!

What the hell??

And it wasn’t just a day or so, because she had previous plans (which is still bad), but it was an entire month?  31 Days People!

As a mother, I am outraged at this woman’s behavior.  How could the jury not convict her on the child abuse charge?  I think not reporting a missing child IS child abuse.

I suppose I should add the Florida State prosecutors here, too since they couldn’t manage to prove what the entire Nation already knew.

Casey Killed Caylee.  May she rest in peace.

Douche.
