Our Visit to the New Children’s Museum in San Diego

I’ve pretty much lived in San Diego my whole life and I never knew we had a children’s museum here!  Granted, I only had my first child six years ago and I didn’t really pay attention to kid friendly things, but still.  How could I have never heard of it?  Why didn’t my mom ever take me?  Mom?

He’s being a “bird” in a birdcage no less…

Originally established in 1983 in La Jolla, the Museum has moved around a bit and changed it’s name a time or two, finally landing as The New Children’s Museum in the downtown marina district of San Diego.

The Museum is FABULOUS!

Located at 200 West Island, San Diego CA, the Museum is a huge building full of fun.  Giant windows and skylights allow lots of natural light.  Colorful exhibits delight children from toddler to teens.  My boys wanted to do everything…first.  Each boy wanted to do something other than their brother (of course) and half way to that destination, something else would catch their eye.  It was quite amusing, and annoying, all at the same time.

is it paint or goop?  He didn’t care

There were things to paint, mold, hear and climb.  They had scheduled workshops for building birdhouses and keepsake boxes.  There was a lesson on thunder and lightening in the Rain Room, a bubble machine working double time on the balcony.

Sensory overload.  But in a good way.

Kids are not told to “shush” in this Museum.  Exploration and touching are encouraged.

When we arrived around 11am, it was very crowded.  I could tell that there were school groups touring the facility.  Little kids in white shirts were everywhere!  The boys participated in a birdhouse collage workshop and it was hard to hear the instructor.  Of course, it didn’t really matter.  They were so good with the kids.  Nobody got left out or forgotten.  We created masterpieces!

We left at lunch to find some food.  You can bring your own lunch to the Museum, which is awesome!  Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this until it was too late.  The Museum does have a little cafe serving sandwich’s and snacks, but lunch time was pretty full so I asked the front desk what was kid friendly and nearby for lunch.   She quickly produced a sheet with several delicious options.  We headed two blocks down and ate at the famous Cafe 222.

When we returned from lunch, the Museum was much quieter.  I was mentioning it to Bob and an employee overheard me.  She told me that they do not have school groups after 1pm.  This is a good thing to note!  The afternoon was much less chaotic and a lot more manageable.  It was easier to hear and keep track of three wild and crazy boys.  We will definitely plan our next visit for after lunch.

Summer Camp at The New Children’s Museum

The New Children’s Museum has launched an extended series of summer camps in San Diego for children entering grades one through six. Focusing on inspiring imagination and cultivating creativity through project-based learning, kids have the opportunity to explore traditional and contemporary forms of art making hand-in-hand with seasoned artists. In small groups, an active and personal relationship with each instructor enables children to ask questions and experiment with new ways of thinking.

Here is a printable pdf file with more information!

I would love to get Anthony into a summer camp at this Museum, but I just can’t imagine driving an hour to downtown every single day.  I don’t know how people who work downtown do it!  But perhaps if you live closer to the downtown area, this would be a great activity for your kids.  They have several different camp curriculum’s to choose from.

The New Children’s Museum is regularly priced at $10.00 per person (kids and adults).  Our one visit would have cost us $50.00 since we are a family of five (whoa, look at Rhea doing math!).  Well, for just $85.00 we can purchase a Family Membership and have unlimited visits for all of us year round!  That costs less than two visits paid for at the regular price and The New Children’s Museum is definitely worth visiting more than once!  The Museum offers three different membership packages, check them out and decide what is best for your family.

I am so excited to have discovered The New Children’s Museum.  It was AMAZING!  The boys are already asking to go back!   Do you have a cool Children’s Museum like this near you?  Have you visited?

Octopus Gargen at Sea Life Aquarium Finally Open!

Last week I was invited out to a grown up blogger meet and greet at the Sea Life Aquarium.  Besides the fun and networking and getting to meet other local San Diego bloggers, we were supposed to be introduced to the new Octopus Garden exhibit.  Unfortunately, the stars of the exhibit hadn’t arrived yet!

I’m not sure exactly what happened, but the Octopus’, cuttle fish and other sea critters had not arrived in time for our preview.  Of course, we still had a fabulous time!

I got to hang out with the always fun, Lucy from the Post Partum Illness blog.  I’ve gotten to know Lucy recently and am so glad to call her my friend.  She’s even going to meet us at Legoland for the twins’ upcoming birthday.

I also got the pleasure to meet Meryl from Blogmedaily.com.  I was driving right past her house so I was able to pick her up and have some fun conversation on the drive to Carlsbad.

It was really a lot of fun.  Snacks and cocktails while hanging around the tide pools.  And the best part was NO KIDS!

We did get to see this very BIG octopus just hanging out waiting to move into his new enclosure.  It was really pretty creepy looking!

So all of the Octopus Garden critters are finally in their homes and they are waiting for you to go check them out.  If you’ve never been to Sea Life Aquarium, it is right next door to Legoland in Carlsbad, CA.  It’s a smaller, more intimate aquarium and I think it is a lot of fun.

San Diego Science Festival is Here!

The San Diego Science Festival is back! Widely known as the largest celebration of science on the West Coast, on March 19-26 the Festival is hosting dozens of countywide events promising to “excite the minds” of hundreds of thousands of students and their families.

The 2011 SDSF will feature events such as Family Day at Balboa Park, special events at the Birch Aquarium and Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Science of Beer, an event by the Science Entertainment Exchange, and Science Sampler at SDSU. The festival will culminate with EXPO Day, the Festival’s largest event––a FREE all-day celebration of science––on Saturday, March 26 at PETCO Park, co-hosted by the Padres and the City of San Diego.  Expo Day will include over 150 hands-on activities and exciting stage shows and is guaranteed to entertain and educate everyone aged 3 to 93!

The San Diego Science Festival is organized by the UC San Diego, with the support of hundreds of community collaborators, to educate students across the region and inform the public about how important scientific discoveries influence the quality of their daily lives.  Visit http://www.sdsciencefestival.com/ for complete details including a calendar of events.

I don’t know about you…but this sounds like SO MUCH FUN!  I was looking through the daily schedules and there are different activities in different places around town throughout the week.  Anthony really want’s to go looking for bugs in the San Diego River bed on Sunday (lucky me).  And it’s FREE.  This is a great week for homeschoolers, so many outings that are fun and educational.  I’m super excited.

Benefit Concert for Pennies 4 Penny!

If you are new around these parts then perhaps you have not met my cousin Penelope.  On February 26, 2010 my cousin’s (nearly) one year old daughter, Penny was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.  It was devastating news that tested my cousin’s little family more than any new family should have to be tested.  On top of the horrifying news that sweet little Penny was going to be in the fight for her life, they learned that their privately paid medical insurance was only going to cover about 60% of Penny’s treatments.  That made a stressful situation that much worse.

So…It’s time for another fund raiser!

This time my brother, Eric from www.ultimatelocalmusic.com has whipped up a rock out kind of party to raise some more money for Penny.

Molly Malone’s is a very cool sports tavern here in Ramona and they are donating the space for this fundraiser.  Ultimate Local Music works with many San Diego rock and roll bands and they have partnered with bands who are donating their time to perform for you!

Her Bed of Thorns, Canonbliss, Natural Selection, Dead Serial Killers and Against the World are all scheduled to perform.

There will be raffle prizes, including autographed memorabilia.

$10 at the door.

Saturday March 26, 2011
8:00pm

Molly Malone’s
1270 Main Street
Ramona, CA 92065

I really hope if you live in the San Diego/Ramona/North County area you can make it to the show.  It will be awesome!  ALL PROCEEDS GO TO PENNIES4PENNY.ORG!

If you are unable to make it up, please consider donating at Pennies4Penny.org.  Every little bit still helps this little girl fight for her life.

Please share this information with your friends!

The 2011 San Diego Cake Show

Do you ever have one of those weekends where you feel like you need another weekend just to recover?  Well, we had one of those weekends!  Saturday was a series of three birthday celebrations that kept us gone from 11am until 10pm.  It was one heck of a long day full of monkey bars, {lots of} cake and running.  The main event on Saturday was my cousin Lisa’s surprise party which I am so happy to say, we actually surprised her.  She is not easy to fool so her husband worked his ass off to keep it all on the down low.  I’ll have pictures later, but right now, I really want to tell you about our Sunday at the San Diego Cake Club’s Annual Cake Show.

I had not even heard about the event before Saturday when my mom saw a blurb about it on the morning news.  I’m SO glad she mentioned it because it was awesome!  It was held in La Jolla over the weekend and showcased all kinds of amazing cakes and sugar crafts, from amateur to professional.  They even have a kids section and Anthony is already planning out his entry for next years show!

click to enlarge!  It’s totally worth it.

I actually left my house without my good camera.  Bob tried giving it to me, but I told him I didn’t need it.  I was wrong.  There were so many extraordinary cakes and my little iPhone camera just did not do them justice.  Reminder:  Don’t ever leave your camera at home.  Ever.

The cake in the center above, the fairy, it was hand painted with royal icing.  Amazing!  And the dragon on the right was the professional “best in show” winner for the whole competition.  We got to meet the cake artist who created it and she was so sweet to Anthony, humoring him and answering all his gazillion questions.  I wish I had a picture of the detail, each scale looked hand placed.  Beautiful.

The cake show also had tons of amazing raffle items and a cupcake decorating station for the kids.  We even met the Cake Boss (well…his cardboard twin).  And that picture of Anthony on the right?  That’s a very big Mad Hatter cake!  It was really crowded and I couldn’t step back far enough to get the whole darn thing in the picture, it was HUGE.

All the money raised from the Cake Show is donated to the San Diego Ronald McDonald house which is very cool.  That’s an organization near and dear to us with everything happening with Penny, my cousin Carina spends a lot of unwanted time there.  So we had a great day, saw some amazing artwork and donated to a wonderful charity.  I can’t wait till next year!

Have you ever been to a cake show?  My mom almost has me convinced to enter a Mario Bros cake next year, but I don’t think I have the amount of talent that these people have in their pinkies!  I really love cake decorating, but unfortunately, I’m not real creative on my own.
