Ready Or Not, Here I Go!

Well, it’s Thursday and I’m writing this up now since I’ll be up at the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow morning to take on the biggest adventure imaginable.  I will be leaving at 4:30am to begin my 3 day, 60 mile journey of a lifetime.  I’m so excited!

But, I’m also terrified!

What if I can’t make it 60 miles?  My feet have given me nothing but grief for the past several weeks.  I have to wear a cast for goodness sakes (my husband has pointed out that it’s not exactly a “cast” but it’s a “walking cast” or “boot”…I say potAto, he say’s potAHto)!  What if I just don’t have what it takes?  What if my back goes out again?  What if I’m not strong enough?

I also feel a little cheated this time around.  My broken foot robbed me of several training weeks.  I didn’t get to meet with as many people that I wanted.  I didn’t get to lead my training walks that I had hoped to.  I never walked further than 11.29 miles.

Here is another fabulous quote from my favorite 3 Day for the Cure message boards poster, Larry:

I am so nervous! – Ok, you’re nervous. So what?

What if I can’t walk all the way? – Who cares? No one is keeping track but you.

What if I get a blister? – What if you do?

What if I don’t know anyone? – You’ll meet hundreds of nice people.

What if I packed too much? – You did.

What if I didn’t pack something? – You’ll live.

What if it rains? – You’ll get wet; you won’t drown.

What if there’s lightning? – You’ll be moved to a safe indoor location.

What if it’s cold? – You won’t freeze to death.

What if it is hot? – You’ll sweat.

What if I don’t like the food? – You’ll pass 472 convenience stores; you’ll manage.

What if I don’t like the porta-potties? – No one “likes” the porta-potties. You’ll survive.

What if I don’t like the showers? – Ok, don’t shower. But check with your tent mate first.

What if I can’t sleep in a tent? – You’ll be tired; you’ll sleep.

Thank you, Larry for giving me perspective.  I really hope I get to meet him, he’s always got the most inspirational messages that really help me focus.

And let me not forget who I’m walking for.  My sister, Debra.  My aunt, Terri.  My grandmother, Louise.  They all kicked cancers butt and I am so proud to call them my family.

I’m also walking for myself.  If you’ve read my blog for any length of time, you will know I had my own brush with breast cancer just a few weeks back.  I underwent a mammogram just for the “blogworthyness” of it, turned out there was a lump that needed a biopsy.  I thank God that it ended up being nothing, but for about 2 weeks I was terrified!  I couldn’t stop thinking that THIS is what I was fighting for.  IF I ended up with breast cancer, I KNEW that it was caught early and I would be okay.  At least that’s what I told myself.

But really, the best thing in the world will be when breast cancer doesn’t exist anymore.

THAT is what I’m fighting for.

That is what we are all fighting for.

So please join me and all of the other San Diego walkers as we make our voices heard.  We will walk until we don’t have to walk anymore!

Here is the list of San Diego Cheering StationsPLEASE come out and cheer on the walkers!  Walking 60 miles is no stroll in the park.  We are going to be tired and many will be hurting.  Your smiling faces and encouraging signs make such a huge difference to our spirits.

I will be tweeting and posting on my Facebook throughout the weekend.  On twitter, follow the hashtags #keepgoing and #the3day.  Then you won’t miss an update from me or from the many other tweeting walkers.  I will also be posting here on my blog live from the Energizer® tent in the evenings.

Finally,  I want to thank Energizer® for sponsoring me for this event.  They have been a presenting sponsor of The 3 Day for the Cure® for many years and sponsoring me as a blogger was just a phenomenal experience.  I have loved sharing my experiences with you as the Keep Going® Blogger.

Everyone Deserves a Lifetime.

I’ll be doing it again in 2011.

Hopefully without the cast.

Get Your Spirit Sleeves and Help End Breast Cancer!

I was recently contacted by another San Diego 3 Day for the Cure walker.  Lara lee has met her fund raising minimum of $2300.00 and now she wants to help other walkers who maybe are not quite at goal yet.  She is selling the most adorable pink accessories called “Spirit Sleeves.”  Here are the details:

I (Lara Lee) am so blessed to be walking in support of my Step-Mom Deborah and her brave fight against breast cancer this past year. I am also so blessed to have met my fundraising goal…however…not all of the walkers have!

I am selling Spirit Sleeves (socks for your arms) and donating $5.00 per pair to walkers who have not yet raised their monies.

Here is the link to check them out!

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=44857&l=8a42ca5f89&id=174858485858249

Pink/White stripe – $20.00 each or 2 for $30.00

Pink/White stripe with some “bling” – $30.00 each or 2 for $50.00

If you would like to purchase a pair for yourself or for each of your team members and look stylish while staying warm for the walk, or if your circle of supporters of friends and family would like to cheer you on with some pink/white sleeves, please e-mail me at spiritsleeves@yahoo.com or come see me (at camp) at my ten – M-79

If you are a San Diego walker (2010) and have not raised all your funds, please e-mail me at spiritsleeves@yahoo.com and I will compile names to contact after the walk to donate funds to help you meet your goal.

Remember…Say It. Fight It. Cure It. We are all in this together!

These Spirit Sleeves are wicked cute and I’ll be sporting a pair this weekend, too.  I think we are going to need them since the forecast is still calling for rain!  I think Laura Lee is amazing for trying to help other walkers meet their goals.  Will you please help?

It’s Our Turn, San Diego!

The time has come.  All these weeks of fund raising, preparing, walking, walking and more walking will culminate in a three day journey of a lifetime beginning this Friday.  I feel both unprepared and ready as I’ll ever be.  I mean, it seems I’ve done nothing but train and prepare for the past six months, but injuries have prevented me from really training as much as I should have.  This worries me.  But, talking with other walkers along the way have reassured me.  They tell me the most important part is done.  We’ve raised funds and we’ve raised awareness for breast cancer research.  The 60 mile walk is just icing on the cake and there will be no shame in taking a few sweep vans.

San Diego 3 Day For The Cure Cheering Stations

I will forever love anyone who comes out to cheer on the walkers!  This is such a life-changing event for the walkers.  Don’t think for one moment that this is easy for anyone.  We need your support, San Diego!  Come out and CHEER!

Cheering Stations

Public cheering stations are a great way to show your support along the route to encourage walkers and let them know that you are with them every step of the way. Seeing familiar faces cheering them on can provide that extra burst of energy that gets them to take that next step or go the next mile. Create banners, hold up signs, bring some music and make some noise – anything to make them smile, get energized and KEEP GOING!

Please note that only registered participants with a valid event credential should be walking on the 3-Day route and utilizing the 3-Day pit stops. We ask that all supporters and spectators gather at cheering stations in order to show their support, and do not walk the route or drive along the route.

While at Home

Something to think about if you have a family member walking:

Capture the 3-Day in the news: While walkers are taking steps to end breast cancer, save any media coverage of the 3-Day. Aside from being a nice addition to your participant’s 3-Day memorabilia, it will show his/her impact on the community.

Engage the kids in the cause: Since holding down the fort may include taking care of the kids, you can make this time meaningful by connecting them with the breast cancer cause.

  • Have them create signs or decorations if they are able to go to a cheering station.
  • Have them create a welcome home banner.
  • Give them journals so they can write or draw what they’ve been doing for three days.
  • Have them plan a welcome home meal or put together a care package with goodies, movies, comfy slippers, etc.
  • Use this as an opportunity to talk to your kids about community, helping others and making a difference in the world.

I Am A Pink Warrior!

I am going to leave you today with The 3-Day For The Cure anthem, Pink Warrior by Candy Coburn.  I dare you not to get goosebumps or even get a little teary eyed listening to it.  It sums up nicely what we are all here doing.

aside

I happened to notice a tweet mentioning rain in the forecast for San Diego next weekend.  It hardly ever rains here, I mean it’s San Diego for crying out loud!  What is this world coming to?

I didn’t even bother buying a poncho because the odds of it raining here were so low.  You know what they say about “assuming.”  That will show me…

Off to buy a poncho so I can Keep Going®.

Rockstars!

Training walks are the single best way to ready your body and spirit for participating in The 3 Day for the Cure.  Unfortunately for me, mostly because of my rural location and husbands work schedule, I have to do most of my training walks alone.  This is okay, but certainly not the most fun way to train.

Today, I had a request from the Filipino Press to do an interview.  The reporter wanted to experience a training walk with me.  I decided it would be a great chance to get “down the hill” and participate in a training with other walkers.

Susan met up with me at the Mission Bay Visitors Center where we found the other walkers.  We then found Lesli who was our leader.

I don’t really know what I was thinking, but it never occurred to me that Susan would be coming on a twelve mile walk with us.  I just figured she would hang out for a bit, do my interview and then head home.  But no.  She wanted to experience the walk.  Ok.  Crazy, but Ok.  Built in to the training walk was an 8 mile option and Susan said she would go 8 miles.

Wow.  Rockstar!

Training commenced and Susan and I were at the back of the pack just chatting away.  I’m always the slow one anyways so it was working out well.  About five miles into the walk, Susan ran out of water and we stopped to get her some.  This is when we asked “where is the eight mile turn around” at?

Ooohh..but that happened a while back.  We were on the 13 mile loop!  Oh. No!

POOR SUSAN!

I felt terrible.  I apologized over and over to Susan who just smiled and laughed.  Lesli offered to call her husband to come get us and take us back to our cars.  But Susan was amazing and said she would Keep Going®.

We did end up taking a bit of a short cut and it made our total distance end up a t 11.64 miles.  This is the longest I have gone and was thrilled with myself!

Susan got one heck of a training experience story!  As soon as I get a copy of it, I’ll share it with you.

Here is a picture of the group entering Crown Point Shores, which incidentally will be the location of the San Diego Camp.

That’s right baby!  The pink posse is moving in.  It will be a very special event indeed.

I was so happy to spend the morning with this group of ladies.  I can’t thank Lesli enough for making me feel included and for running back to check on Susan and I.  I can’t thank Susan enough for being an honorary 3 Day for the Cure walker.  I think I might actually have her talked into participating with me next year…we’ll see!

One week left.
