Green Tips from Bissell

mommy23monkeys

A good spring cleaning does wonders for the home, but its impact on the environment is often less than sparkling. As part of its mission to “Get A Little Greener,” cleaning expert, BISSELL Homecare Inc. has released a set of tips to help all spring cleaners achieve the desired environmental result – indoors and out.

1)       Look for cleaning products and tools that are manufactured using recycled components

-          BISSELL’s new Green Little Green compact deep-cleaner is manufactured in a closed loop process using a minimum of 50 percent post consumer recycled plastic. BISSELL calculates that if every adult in the U.S. purchased a Green Little Green, it would be like recycling 658 million pounds of plastic, or 20 million bags of trash. The tanks and hose are also PVC free, and the carton and inserts are 100 percent recyclable. The new Green Little Green will be on shelves from June, retailing at $89.99.

2)       Steam is an all-natural cleaner, sanitizing surfaces without the need for chemicals

-          BISSELL’s Steam Mop™ uses the disinfecting power of steam to clean hard floors naturally, with no harmful fumes or streaky residue left behind. After cleaning, the MicroFiber mop pads can be washed and reused, eliminating the waste of disposable cloths. $79.99

3)       Instead of using paper towels and disposable surface wipes, opt to turn your fraying t-shirts into good old-fashioned rags. Re-using textiles is a great way to reduce your environmental impact, as well as keep a few extra dollars in your pocket.

4)       Not sure what type of impact those chemicals under your sink will have on the environment? Look for sprays and formulas that are biodegradable, without phosphates, dyes, optical brighteners or heavy metals.

5)       If you do have a tough stain, read the label on all sprays and formulas, and look for those that carry eco-friendly certification like the Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment (DfE) seal

-          All BISSELL machine formulas carry DfE certification, and BISSELL was recently named a “Champion Formulator” in the DfE program’s Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative

GIVEAWAY ~ Bissell Little Green Machine (closed)

1400-l

Do you have kids?  Then you have stains!  And since you have stains, you NEED a Bissell Little Green Machine.

I really don’t know how I survived my life before I got this amazing little machine delivered to my door.  We have a big carpet shampooer/steamer thing.  It’s huge.   But I’ve always appreciated having it…came in handy after all 3 boys suffered a stomach bug!  Well, wouldn’t you know that one of the twins conveniently suffered a stomach bug right after I opened my new Bissell?  Yeppers.  I was actually happy the little guy was sick because it meant I could really try the thing out.

Let me not get ahead of myself here.

My Bissell arrived at my door courtesy of Wal Mart and Bissell in conjunction with Wal Mart’s Earth Month celebration.  Wal Mart currently has a You Tube channel devoted to environmental tips and reviews.  I made a couple videos that might end up on there before the end of the month. :)   How’s that for special?  One of my videos happens to be the following Bissell Green Machine review.  Take a look…don’t laugh!

The thing I loved most about this little machine?  It REALLY works!  And it works fantastic!  As you can see in my video, it took that dining room stain up in no time at all.  I don’t even know what that stain was it had been there so long.  But as I mentioned above, Dennis got sick like 3 days after making my video and he barfed all over the hallway.  I just whipped my Little Green Machine out and had the stain cleaned up lickety split.  Before I had this machine, I would have wasted an entire pack of baby wipes cleaning it up.  How’s that for not being environmentally friendly?

Speaking of environmentally friendly…Bissell has put a lot of thought into this version of the Little Green Machine.  They took out all the PVC from the holding tanks and hoses, built it using no less that 50% post consumer recycled plastic, they reformulated the cleaning solution and they repacked the machine with all cardboard…no styrofoam or PVC inserts.

And the boxes make for fun, too!
