Monday Mojo: Why I Started Blogging

Once upon a time, my husband said, “hey, why don’t you start blogging so you can make us a lot of money.”

Then I thought, “well why not?  How hard could it be?”

And so in October of 2008 a blog was born.

Actually, I think it was a few months before October that I officially started blogging,  but it was purely entertainment and it was in October that my husband decided I should become serious about it.  October is when I purchased www.mommy23monkeys.com.  A real live domain name just for me!  It was a very exciting time for me.  Full of promise and new beginnings.

I had NO clue.

Those early days were full of personal posts about baking and stories of my little boys.  I knew nothing about SEO or PR. My blog was flat out ugly, but I did all the design myself so I was proud.

<~~ I had a really crazy button!

One of the coolest things I’ve learned on this blogging trip is how to do design and code CSS.  I’ve never hired anyone to do a blog design for me.  While they might not be quite as fancy as some “professionals,” they are mine and I’ve been pretty proud of them.  I think I love this part of blogging the most.

My blog has morphed a few times along the way.  I tried to focus on camping, and green living.  I’ve talked about home-school and ADHD.  I finally decided that I was most comfortable just being little ole’ random me.

The years have gone by and I have made some fabulous friendships along the way.  And while I’m a lot smarter now than I was three years ago, I do not make a living with my blog.  The one thing I would tell a newbie blogger is that it’s a lot harder than it looks.  I’ve had months where I’ve made several hundred dollars, but that is about it.  It’s not a job you take because of the easy money.  Blogging is a job you take because you love the community, you love to write, you love to talk.  Blogging is a passion and some people are lucky enough to get paid.

If you are a blogger, how did you get started?  What made you take the leap and put yourself out there?  What have you learned along the way?  Write about it and then link up with Eclectic Six Media’s Monday Mojo.

How I Started Review Blogging

Waaaayy back in January, I was bored and asked my readers for questions that I could make a blog post out of to answer.  Well, Erica asked the question about how I got started doing product reviews.  I am finally getting around to answering her and I am SO sorry for taking so long!  I was trying to think about what to write, how to say it and how to sound smart.  I gave up on that.

Once upon a time, my husband told me I needed to start trying to earn some money online.  He had “heard” of people making TONS of money reviewing products and generating ads.  He told me to research.  And I did.

Lucky for me, I came across a fabulous community of bloggers where I was able to read and learn and share.  At that time, Trisha had many articles on her blog (you can probably search back for them now) about the ins and outs of “mom blogging.”  It was all very exciting and I had so much fun trying to turn my regular ole’ family blog into something else.  Something more.

I signed up for a few blogger groups like My Blog Spark and Child’s Play PR.

While I waited for some dream company to contact me and offer me a gazillion dollars I did a few “reviews” of stuff I had around the house.  These posts were not that great.  But it gave me a little practice and let potential marketing agencies know that I was willing to talk about products.

Then one day, I got an email.  It was a little company, offering a little giveaway and off I went.  It really just grew from there.  About this time last year I was doing a ton of giveaways and reviews.  It was FUN, but also a LOT of work (yes, people…this is WORK).  It got overwhelming.  So I had to learn that it was okay to say “no” once in a while and now I am a lot more picky with what I agree to do.

If you make it known that you are willing to test products, the PR people will find you.

Review blogging has gotten extremely competitive lately so be sure to find a group of people that you can work together with to build your audience.  It’s best to make friends and not enemies!  Stay true to yourself and your beliefs, don’t sell out for a buck.  I still don’t make very much money and I work hard everyday to build my blog, make connections and meet friends.  That is what is important to me.

Heather wrote a post recently about making your blog the best it can be so that you can try to stand out amongst the masses.

Kathleen has a great guideline for writing a pitch letter for when you get brave enough to start contacting companies yourself.

If you are a blogger and have some of your own tips to share with newbies, feel free to leave them in the comments.  I would appreciate it!

What Kind of Blogger am I?

I really have no idea.

Actually, I do have an idea.  I am ME.

I talk a lot about my family and my kids.  Heck, I stay home with them.  I have no car.  I don’t have anything else to talk about.  My day is filled with boogers and farting and wiping asses.  So when a PR rep contacts ME, I.AM.STOKED!

Actually, not too many companies contact me.  I usually stalk them until they give in and tell me “yes” in order to get me to leave them alone.

So all this talk lately about mommy blogger’s “selling out” for yogurt (which I wasn’t offered, BTW), or not “disclosing” how they come up with their opinion, I just can’t seem to care.  It’s SO stupid.

Whatever happened to “live and let live?”  Why do you care what I do?  Why does anyone have to be so judgmental of everyone else?  Who cares if one mommy is giving away cereal or another one has a new freaking car to test drive?  WHO CARES!?

(BTW – if Ford reads mommy blogs, I am shopping for a new F150 and would LOVE to “test” one out *wink*)

Take a moment to pay attention to what YOU are doing.  Are you happy with your blog?  Are you happy with yourself?  At the end of the day are your proud of the example you are setting?  Then who fucking cares what the mommy blogger down the street thinks!

Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Live and let live.

Mind your own business.
