Well, It Seemed Like a Brilliant Idea

You know I’m on a quest to be a better mommy and try some new things in the kitchen, right?  The new cookbook I have been working out of is Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill.  So far the couple recipes I’ve tried have been great!

Throughout the book, the author shares little tips and tricks for making prep easy, cheap and fun.  Well one tip that she shared was to put vanilla ice cream in your kids’ oatmeal.  When you make oatmeal, don’t you usually add cream/milk and sugar anyways?  Isn’t that all that vanilla ice cream is?

Brilliant!

So I thought…

I was thinking this would be SO cool.  My boys will think I’m a ROCKSTAR if I let them eat ice cream for breakfast.  What a brilliant idea.  There is probably a whole lot less sugar in a tiny scoop of ice cream as there is in those expensive flavored packets anyways.  Am I right?  I couldn’t wait to try it out.

The first day went pretty well with Mr. A and NayNay.  They actually ate most of their oatmeal and yes, they were thrilled at having ice cream.  I thought I struck gold.  Yippee!

It was no surprise that BoBo only ate his ice cream.  Turkey!  But he is my really difficult and picky eater so I wasn’t really surprised.  All in all, I thought we had a winning idea and I would try it again.

I made breakfast this morning.

Nobody ate any oatmeal.

I had 3 bowls of oatmeal left on the table with a divot in it where once there was a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

*sigh*

Brilliant idea gone bad.  Maybe my boys are just more difficult than the rest of the world?  Maybe they are just more spoiled?  After eating ice cream they sat at the table singing their “poopy song” at the top of their lungs.  I think it was too much ice cream…

Small Talk Six ~ Breakfast!

mmmmm…..I love breakfast.  This weeks Small Talk Six is “6 Breakfast Foods you Love or Hate.” Well, there aren’t many breakfast foods that I hate.  So this week was easy.

1.  Stuffed French Toast.  O.M.G.  Just this morning me and my mom went to Mimi’s Cafe where they have “mixed berry pain perdu.”  It’s to die for!  This is not a picture of that…but it’s pretty darn close.

2.  Cheese Blintz.  You’ll notice this week that I am a sugar addict.  Cheese Blintz are no exception to this.  Sweet crepes filled with cream cheese/cottage cheese/sugar and lots of times topped with fruit.  IHOP has some good ones.

3.  Lucky Charms!

4.  Chocolate Chip Pancakes.  Yumo!

So my top 4 are sugar filled deliciousness…here are my final 2, sans sugar.

5.  Biscuits and gravy.  If it’s topped with cheddar cheese, it’s even better.

6.  Finally, Creamed Chip Beef.  Or if you are military, Shit on a Shingle.

Alright, so now I’m hungry.  If you want to participate in Small Talk Six then head on over to momdot.com!
