A Coleman Camping Staycation Birthday!
We camp. A lot. I am a firm believer in the saying that goes: “A family that plays together, stays together.” I love taking the boys to the desert for off road weekend’s and I love taking them to visit the beauty of National Monuments. I mean, heck. They are boys. Anywhere that allows them to be outside in the dirt is a good thing!
Sometimes we even bring the spirit of a camping adventure to our own front yard. Such as this past weekend when Anthony chose to have a camping adventure/sleepover to celebrate his sixth birthday.
Lucky for me, I had recently received a generous sampling of Coleman camping supplies!
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you know that Coleman is the go-to name in camping gear. And I LOVE their current television campaign that claims they are the original “social network.” (watch the video…it’s cute and clever!). And I agree. My entire extended family all get together to socialize around a good campfire eating grilled meat and enjoying cold drinks. It’s the best!
You certainly can’t have a campout without something to camp in. Coleman sent us their Sundome® 6 family tent. This is a HUGE tent! It’s big enough for our family of five and has a room divider for privacy (as if you can actually get “privacy” when camping). It was 2 criss-cross poles and SO easy to set up. Anthony pretty much did it by himself.
The tent has 2 doors which makes it nice for middle of the night potty runs…no trying to find your way out over sleeping bodies. There was even a little “doggie” door, but I think that’s for accessing your ice chest. The center height is 72 inches so plenty of room for standing and dressing. It was a super hot weekend here in Southern California, so we left the rain topper off and literally slept under the stars. The entire top of the tent is mesh and it made for a fun conversation talking about the bright moon and beautiful stars.
The Sundome 6 retails for $149.99 and is a great and easy family tent.
The 2 Gallon Party Stacker Jug is a great way to have cold beverages easily available. They are designed to stack together and come in two colors so it’s easy to differentiate “adult” beverage from “kids” beverage. We used it for cherry lemonade at Anthony’s party. I love that the spigot can be removed so it doesn’t get all crusty and gross. These will be filled with margaritas come desert season!
The 2 Gallon Party Stacker Jug comes in red and blue and retails for $19.99 each.
The 50 Quart Wheeled Xtreme 5 Cooler did a great job keeping our drinks cold. It’s supposed to keep your food/drinks cold for up to 5 days in 90 degree temperatures! I didn’t test this claim, but I’ll certainly put it to this test come desert season. I’ll let you know. But I did love how easy it was to maneuver. These coolers with wheels are the bomb!
The 50 Quart Wheeled Xtreme 5 cooler retails for $49.99.
Our Willow Creek Sleeping Bag kept Anthony nice and warm (not that he needed it since it was such a warm night). I really liked how soft it was and it wasn’t made out of cold, slippery nylon like our other bags. I hate nylon bags! The Willow Creek Sleeping Bag has a contoured head rest that allows your pillow and head to stay on the bag without being suffocated.
The Willow Creek Sleeping Bag is great for temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees and retails for $34.99.
I hadn’t originally planned on sleeping with the kids in the tent this particular night, but in the end I decided to bust out the Extra High QuickBed airbed and sleep under the stars. The queen size airbed has a built in air pump that inflated the bed quickly and easily. It stayed inflated all night and because it was extra high, I didn’t end up on the dirt half way through the night. The airbed was really comfortable! The only problem I can say about it was that you need an outlet to blow it up. So while it’s great as long as you are near home, it won’t do us much good in the desert where there is no electricity.
The Extra High Queen Size QuickBed retails for $77.99.
My very favorite item out of the whole bunch is the Quad Lantern. This lantern was voted the 2009 Editor’s Choice for new gear award by Camping Life magazine. And I understand why!
The lantern operates on 8D batteries. It has four individual lights that can attach to the base to form one big bright light, or the sections can be removed and operated individually. Each of the four sections recharges itself off the base. This thing is brilliant! I have three boys and they are constantly fighting over the flashlights. They are always losing the flashlights. This lantern solved that whole problem. Each boy had their own light and mommy still had one, too. Everyone was happy. And the individual panels are very bright, consisting of 6 LED lights.
This lantern came in especially handy this week when we had a power outage. Each boy got a light, and the light was bright enough to light the entire room. So the whole house was lit up. I was even able to give one to my mom and dad to take to their house so they could see around, too.
The Quad Lantern is awesome and it retails for $69.99.
I would recommend any of these items as gifts to the outdoor enthusiasts on your holiday gift list this year. Coleman produces some top-notch items.

Campfire Cinnamon Rolls
Did you know that you can still have warm gooey cinnamon rolls even while “roughing” it? I learned, while at the Grand Canyon last week, that I could “bake” cinnamon rolls right on the campfire. It really kind of happened by accident, but we’ll keep that between you and me.
I actually found a recipe on this site that explained how to bake canned cinnamon rolls inside a hollowed out orange. This was my original plan. Until a squashed orange and a hot trailer compartment molded my oranges and tried to thwart my plans. But being the former Girl Scout that I am, I improvised!
I knew you could bake on a campfire using a Dutch Oven. Unfortunately, I didn’t have one handy (I don’t have one at all). But I did have my favorite cast iron skillet. So I placed my 5 large, Cinnabon style Cinnamon rolls into my skillet, put a lid on it, and placed it on the fire.
I told the boys not to get their hopes up.
But, after about 10 minutes, I took a peek…
HOLY COW! We had half baked cinnamon rolls! WOOT!
The instructions on the can of rolls said to bake for 20 minutes. So I checked again a bit later and Viola! Cinnamon rolls.
Now, the bottoms were a little overdone (burned). But we just picked the black part off and enjoyed the gooey goodness anyways. My advice for you (and myself) is next time, don’t place the skillet directly over the flame. Keep it to the side, but still in the heat, so that the bottom doesn’t burn.
Now, if you are planning a camping trip, be sure to at least have a good cast iron skillet with you. I hope to be getting a cast iron Dutch Oven before we go out again. There is so much you can do on a campfire with a dutch oven.
Anyhow, take a can of cinnamon rolls with you and you’ll be the most popular person at camp!
We Survived the Grand Canyon
My family had the best (near) week at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim! I’ve talked about our camping before (we do it a lot), but usually our trips include a lot of my large extended family. This was the first time just the 5 of us embarked on an adventure of our own. I thought it would be fun to plan something big and educational. I think the Grand Canyon provided that.
I made the decision to to visit the North Rim rather than the more popular South Rim, because, well…it’s less popular. The North Rim has about 1/4 the annual visitors as the South side and it’s a lot more rural/rustic. We were lucky that I planned ahead and got reservations in the absolutely beautiful North Rim Campground. The campground made it so that we were only a few hundred feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon. It was very cool!
I took LOTS of pictures and had a really great time planning a fun camping menu. I actually had quite a few fun food ideas that I will share with you soon, so check back.
I took 282 pictures on the 4 days we were gone. Crazy tourist! So I’ve broken them down into a few themes so I can share them with you. These pictures above are some of my favorites of the North Rim in general. The top one (biggest) was taken from Bright Angel Point, the highest elevation on the North Rim (8100+ feet if I remember right). The bottom middle shot was taken from my camping chair at our campground…space 33.
Speaking of high points…Bob took every chance he could to scare the ever living bejeezus out of me. He would go right out to the very edge of the canyon, with several hundred feet below and yell “take my picture!” I wanted to vomit he wanted to look down. Crazy person. The top right photo above was atop the 10 foot “knoll” on Bright Angel Point. You could not of paid me a million dollars to go up there. I was happy with both feet firmly planted on the trail, thank you very much.
These are my favorite shots of all three boys. As shocking as it seems, I got several pictures with all three of them actually smiling and (sort of) cooperating. I think they had a really good time. At all National Parks they have what’s called a Junior Ranger Program. We were given an activity book and they completed tasks based on their age. It helped the boys learn about the Grand Canyon, the environment and the nature around them. It was fun to sit at our picnic table and talk about all that they were seeing and hearing around them. Then we helped them complete the book and the next day we returned it to the Visitor Center where they were sworn in as Junior Rangers. It was very fun and they are very proud of their badges!
Here are some of my random favorites out of the 282 pictures I took:
L-R clockwise: Bright Angel Trail, me and the boys on the Transept Trail, me and the boys on the Coconino Overlook (North Kaibab Trail), boys being sworn in as Jr. Rangers, Anthony at sunset, looking through some rocks.
L-R Clockwise: Anthony on Bright Angel Point, Bob & Anthony on Bright Angel Trail, Fave of Gabriel, looking up a mossy tree, me and Bob (awww), a mule deer that visited the campground.
And then, on our last night at the canyon, I finally got to see the spectacular Grand Canyon Sunset. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
Bob and I talked a lot during the 12 hour drive home and we’ve decided two things:
- We are going to plan more National Park trips. It was amazing and beautiful. Such a great learning opportunity for our children to learn to appreciate the Country that so many of us take for granted. There are 58 National Parks in the US and we plan on taking the boys to as many as we can before they are too old and don’t want to go with us anymore.
- Bob and I are going to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, stay the night, and hike back out. It was absolutely the most awe inspiring place I had ever been. And since I’m turning over a new “healthy” leaf and trying to live my life rather than just sit it out…I think hiking the canyon is a great thing to add to my “bucket list.”
Being the good blogger that I am, I took pictures of some of our fun camping meals. I’ll be back later this week with how-to’s so you can use them on your next camping trip, too.
Let Sam’s Club Provide Your July Fourth Fun
I have really big, close knit family. It’s been a long standing joke with us that we will use “any excuse for a party.” We recently went camping and I took advantage of Sam’s Club to plan and throw a mega-huge family celebration. It was awesome!
I started out by following Sam’s Club suggestions for a Big Party Fourth Celebration. Online they have everything you need to plan and execute a top-notch party. Tips for food, fun and special finishing touches. Everything from delicious burgers to red, white and blue decor. They’ve got it covered. And the best part was that I could get it all in one place, no dragging three obnoxious little boys all over town!
I started out with my list (that you can create right on their website based off of their suggestions) and I headed to town. Now, items in store may vary from the items listed online. I was really excited to try out their organic beef burgers (you know, since I’m trying to cut out all preservatives in our house). I was a little bummed that they did not carry the organic burgers in my local store. The one thing I’ve learned from being a mom is the art of improvisation! So I just substituted for something else. Something like Top Sirloin Steaks. Oh. Darn.
My cousin Lisa – our family chef and griller extraordinaire!
I was able to grab everything else we needed for our large weekend celebration. Plates, drinks, red potato salad (that my family just raved about), decorations and games. It was so convenient.
My cousin Nick fixing up his sirloin burger.
Anthony showing off his desert.
Playing Blastball
Got it!
Maybe you don’t have a GIANT family like me, Sam’s Club still has your party needs covered. They have party planning ideas for a Traditional cookout, a Gourmet Soiree, Kid Friendly antics, and stuff for On The Go adventures.
I just really have to say that my everyone at my party raved. The food was delish, the games were fun and the family time was priceless.
What kind of party are you planning for the July Fourth holiday?
FTC Disclosure: Sam’s Club provided me with a full Fourth of July party pack of items for my participation in the campaign. The opinions are always my own.
