The 3 Day Walk Is Coming San Diego!

If you are new around these parts you may not know that I walked in the 60 mile, Susan G Komen 3-Day for the Cure last year.  I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by Energizer and documented my entire 3-Day journey.

It was the most extraordinary event I have ever participated in.

I walked the entire 3 day walk with a stress fracture in my foot.

Walking for three days, in the rain, with a cast sucked butt.  But I did it.  And I was never more proud of myself!

At closing ceremonies I vowed to participate again.  I was just thrilled when my husband said he wanted to walk it with me.  I could not wait!  Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

My foot is still broken.   And while I’m not wearing my cast (I should be) it gives me pain every day.  After the walk was over, I went into a new boot for several weeks and I was told if it didn’t heal I would need surgery.  A surgery I’ve put off because I just don’t have time for it.  So instead, I deal.  But because I didn’t take care of myself, and my foot is still broken…I had to pass on walking this year.

*sad panda*

I wanted to give my foot time to heal.  In hindsight, I really wish I would have signed up as support staff (Crew) for the event.  I would not have been walking but I still could have been at camp helping support those that were.  I’m kind of irritated at myself for not getting that set up in time.

In anycase….

The walk is happening in San Diego this weekend!!  November 18-20 and San Diego will be going pink.

My soon-to-be-sister-in-law IS walking her first walk and I’m so excited for her.  My co-walkers from last year are also walking.  I’ve been following the other cities events on Facebook and I can’t help but be nostalgic and a little sad.  I want to be there, too!  And while I can’t participate as a walker, I CAN CHEER.

San Diego 2011 3-Day Cheering Stations

Public cheering stations are a great way to show your support along the route to encourage walkers and let them know that you are with them every step of the way. Seeing familiar faces cheering them on can provide that extra burst of energy that gets them to take that next step or go the next mile. Create banners, hold up signs, bring some music and make some noise – anything to make them smile, get energized and keep walking.

Please leave the site cleaner than when you found it and recycle anything that can be recycled. Provide trash receptacles for the walkers if you are planning on passing food or other items out to them. All candy, wrapped items and decorations should be taken with you when leaving the site.

Be prepared, RAIN is in the forecast (again!).  So take an umbrella.  I’m not sure where I will be yet but would love to meet up with others who are cheering.  I can say from experience that the people cheering make a HUGE difference.  When I was tired and just wanted to stop, I thought about the people cheering and what funny stuff might be coming just around the next corner.  It helped me keep going!

With a little more rest (and maybe surgery) I will be out there next year again.  I honestly can not wait!

It’s Our Turn, San Diego!

The time has come.  All these weeks of fund raising, preparing, walking, walking and more walking will culminate in a three day journey of a lifetime beginning this Friday.  I feel both unprepared and ready as I’ll ever be.  I mean, it seems I’ve done nothing but train and prepare for the past six months, but injuries have prevented me from really training as much as I should have.  This worries me.  But, talking with other walkers along the way have reassured me.  They tell me the most important part is done.  We’ve raised funds and we’ve raised awareness for breast cancer research.  The 60 mile walk is just icing on the cake and there will be no shame in taking a few sweep vans.

San Diego 3 Day For The Cure Cheering Stations

I will forever love anyone who comes out to cheer on the walkers!  This is such a life-changing event for the walkers.  Don’t think for one moment that this is easy for anyone.  We need your support, San Diego!  Come out and CHEER!

While at Home

Something to think about if you have a family member walking:

Capture the 3-Day in the news: While walkers are taking steps to end breast cancer, save any media coverage of the 3-Day. Aside from being a nice addition to your participant’s 3-Day memorabilia, it will show his/her impact on the community.

Engage the kids in the cause: Since holding down the fort may include taking care of the kids, you can make this time meaningful by connecting them with the breast cancer cause.

  • Have them create signs or decorations if they are able to go to a cheering station.
  • Have them create a welcome home banner.
  • Give them journals so they can write or draw what they’ve been doing for three days.
  • Have them plan a welcome home meal or put together a care package with goodies, movies, comfy slippers, etc.
  • Use this as an opportunity to talk to your kids about community, helping others and making a difference in the world.

I Am A Pink Warrior!

I am going to leave you today with The 3-Day For The Cure anthem, Pink Warrior by Candy Coburn.  I dare you not to get goosebumps or even get a little teary eyed listening to it.  It sums up nicely what we are all here doing.

More Fashionable Footwear

I’ve been wearing my walking cast for six weeks now and, it looks like I’ll be wearing it for {at least} another six weeks, too.

I went to my Orthopedist today to get checked up.  I have to say that I love this doctor!  If you need an Ortho, she is Dr. Rina Jain of San Diego Sports Medicine.  She is really trying to get my foot ready to be able to participate in the 3 Day.  She is supportive of the fight against breast cancer and I just love that she’s understanding of my goals.  I think a lot of doctors would be all, “heck no, you can’t walk!” But, Dr. Jain is making this work.

Training has been pretty much non-existent lately.  I’ve gotten a few three mile walks in here and there, but it’s hard walking in this contraption.  First, I am about two inches taller in the boot.  So this means that my New Balance walking shoe is too low and therefor I walk with a huge limp.  Because of this, my hip and back are really out of whack and I’m in a lot of pain after a walk.  Besides that, this boot just is not made for long distance walking.  Simple as that.

Dr. Jain has given me another “shoe” to try.  It’s actually the shoe they give to people in a traditional cast so that they don’t have to walk on crutches.  It’s got a much thinner, very ridged sole.  So now I am even with my sneaker.  This will still make it so that I still can not flex and do more damage to my stress fracture, but it should be easier to do longer distances (no limp, not as hot, etc).

I wore this around a little today.  I’m not sure how it is going to work.  It seems to slip on the heel more than I would like.  But, I am going to try it out tomorrow morning by attempting a five mile training walk.

Wish me luck!

Supporting The 3-Day Participants

If you happen to know someone who is walking in the San Diego 3 Day for the Cure {*cough*me*cough*},you can send them a little love and encouragement right to camp.

You are encouraged to send letters to participants and they will be delivered right to their tent by 3 Day crew members!  Isn’t that fun?  Here is the info you need to send a letter:

Send letters to:
