Well, It Seemed Like a Brilliant Idea

You know I’m on a quest to be a better mommy and try some new things in the kitchen, right?  The new cookbook I have been working out of is Family Feasts for $75 a Week: A Penny-wise Mom Shares Her Recipe for Cutting Hundreds from Your Monthly Food Bill.  So far the couple recipes I’ve tried have been great!

Throughout the book, the author shares little tips and tricks for making prep easy, cheap and fun.  Well one tip that she shared was to put vanilla ice cream in your kids’ oatmeal.  When you make oatmeal, don’t you usually add cream/milk and sugar anyways?  Isn’t that all that vanilla ice cream is?

Brilliant!

So I thought…

I was thinking this would be SO cool.  My boys will think I’m a ROCKSTAR if I let them eat ice cream for breakfast.  What a brilliant idea.  There is probably a whole lot less sugar in a tiny scoop of ice cream as there is in those expensive flavored packets anyways.  Am I right?  I couldn’t wait to try it out.

The first day went pretty well with Mr. A and NayNay.  They actually ate most of their oatmeal and yes, they were thrilled at having ice cream.  I thought I struck gold.  Yippee!

It was no surprise that BoBo only ate his ice cream.  Turkey!  But he is my really difficult and picky eater so I wasn’t really surprised.  All in all, I thought we had a winning idea and I would try it again.

I made breakfast this morning.

Nobody ate any oatmeal.

I had 3 bowls of oatmeal left on the table with a divot in it where once there was a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.

*sigh*

Brilliant idea gone bad.  Maybe my boys are just more difficult than the rest of the world?  Maybe they are just more spoiled?  After eating ice cream they sat at the table singing their “poopy song” at the top of their lungs.  I think it was too much ice cream…
