Halloween Costume Controversy

Right now there is a big Brew-Ha-Ha stewing over an “Illegal Alien” Halloween Costume.

illegal alien costumeIt’s an Alien wearing what is perceived to be “prison” garb carrying a fake “green card.”  According to CNN’s story (linked above):

Immigrant rights activists are calling on U.S. retailers to stop selling two controversial “Illegal Alien” costumes that have surfaced for Halloween, saying the outfits are a broadside attack on illegal immigrants.

Seriously?

I thought that as an adult, everything about Halloween was intended to be a “broadside attack” against something.  It’s what we do.  It’s FUNNY.

33-07Isn’t the “pregnant nun” an attack on Catholics?

LostDogPoking fun at fat people?

3641_1821_dirty-priest-costume1This one shocks the hell out of me!  But is it funny?  Yeah…maybe.

ETA:   I was never a victim of such an awful thing but I see where this can be really offensive to a lot of people.  So why hasn’t it been pulled off the market?  I think it’s much more offensive than the Illegal Alien.

MaleGenieHalloweenCostumeThis one is totally making fun of the Indian culture and their magic genies.

So really, people.  Lighten up!  It’s Halloween.

I don’t go out of my way to offend people at all.  I personally, would never wear any of these costumes, but I can certainly see the humor in them.  Halloween is not about being politically correct.  It’s about being wild and outrageous.  Making a statement, whether it’s political or otherwise.  Face it, there are a lot of people in this country that feel strongly about the illegal immigrant problem and this is them making a statement.

Soooo….what do you think?  Offensive?  Funny?  Tacky?  Do you think it’s a big deal or are the “PC” activists going a little crazy?  I really want to know because I want to know if my friends also have a warped sense of humor like me.

Best Halloween Costumes Ever!

Can you even believe that it’s almost Halloween!?  YIKES!  I was talking with Bob last night about what the boys should be this year.  I usually find inspiration somewhere long before now, but this year it snuck up on me and I was at a loss.

Mr. A. told me he wanted to be a Bat.  uumm…okay.  It will pale in comparison to his very cool Robot Costume that we made for him last year.  But he’s (nearly) 5 years old now and I will let him pick his own costume.

The brothers’ however, are still young enough that I get to decide.

But I wasn’t feeling very creative.  I told Bob maybe they could just be “kitty” and “doggy.”  They are in that phase that they pretend they are doggy and kitty all day anyways, so maybe I would just go with that.  Not creative, but cute enough, right?

Then divine inspiration arrived in my email box this afternoon!

I got my Costume Express advertisement and on the front page was these perfect costumes:

mario and luigi costumesAren’t those AWESOME!?

These Mario and Luigi costumes are about $30.00 each (on sale), but they are that “Halloween costume polyester” crap that I’m not sure about.

Now couldn’t I just buy some real denim overalls with the red and green shirts?  That would be better, right? Then they can re-wear the overalls and shirts on other days.  But I need those hat’s!  The hat’s separately are $20 bucks a piece.  In the end, it would be cheaper to just buy the whole polyester costume.

I cringe at the polyester costumes.  It seems kids lack the creativity that we had as children.  I always made my own costumes out of stuff in my closet, no going to the store and picking one off the rack all ready to go.  I don’t want to diss Costume Express or anything, because I owe them a lot right now for giving me great inspiration.  And I do think that they so have some cute and useful stuff (hats and bat wings).  But I think I might try to “make” these.

What do you think?  The boys are going to look so freaking cute!  I can’t wait.
