Let’s Cheer for the Twin City 3 Day Walkers!

The New Balance Cheerleaders at the Boston 3 Day Walk!

I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to share the spectator and cheering information with you for the previous walks.  But if you are not participating as a walker in the Susan G Komen 3 Day for the Cure®, then you should at least head down and cheer the walkers on!

Most (if not all) walkers have dedicated several months of their life to prepare for walking 60 miles.  They have raised lots of funds, sweated, cried and laughed.  While I have not walked yet, I hear that the energy at cheering stations is amazing and really lifts the walkers up.  So please, if you live near a participating 3-Day city, then head out and cheer!

99 Day Countdown to the San Diego Walk

99 days or 14 weeks.  This is all that I have left to get my bootie in shape for the San Diego Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure ® walk.  The time is just flying by and I know it will be here in a blink.  If you are participating in this years walk, here is what our training schedule looks like this week:

Monday Rest
Tuesday 3 miles Easy walking
Wednesday 30 mins Moderate cross-training
Thursday 5 miles Moderate walking
Friday 30 minutes Easy cross-training
Saturday 10 miles Easy walking
Sunday 6 miles Easy walking

How exciting is that?! We are up to 10 mile training walks!  I don’t think I’ve ever voluntarily walked 10 miles in my life and I will attempt my first one Sunday night.

For the first time this week, I used the Training Walk finder in my 3 Day participant center to find a group to walk with.  I have to say that this was the best decision I have made!  So far I’ve been mostly alone walking around my town.  Occasionally, my friend comes with me and once I had a fellow participating walker join me.  But now that my walks are getting longer, my friend isn’t coming and I can’t always coordinate schedules with the other local walkers.

Driving about 45 minutes “down the hill” was a great plan to meet up with some new friends.  I found a walk that was being held in Santee, CA by a group called “Boob Camp Beckie.”  It was a 5-6 mile walk.  All the ladies were very nice, most of them already knew each other but there was me and one other lady who were newbies.  The walk started just after 6pm and the group of ladies (and two gents) took off.

Literally…they took off.  I was being passed left and right and being left in their collective dust.  I didn’t realize just how slow I am!

Thank goodness, the training walk leader, Jeri stayed with me.  I think that’s probably her “job;” not leave anyone behind.  Eventually we caught up to a really great married couple (I suck for not getting their names) and it was the 4 of us.  We only saw a flash of pink two other times the entire walk.  The other group booked it.

I learned a couple lessons on this training walk:

  1. I need to walk faster.
  2. My backpack needs more decorations!
  3. I need a blinkie light since we were walking in the dark.
  4. I need to walk faster.

My 3 new friends were a wealth of knowledge.  I loved hearing stories of past walks and I tucked little tidbits away for future reference.

If you are trying to train for the 3-Day for the Cure walk…JOIN A TRAINING WALK! I can’t say that enough.  It was so much more fun than trudging around town by myself.  You learn from their expertise about what to expect.  I’ll be checking my local schedule and plan on joining other walks in the future.

Upcoming Fundraisers!

A big part of participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure ® is the fund raising.  Each walker is required to raise $2300.00 before they can walk.

This is a bold event with bold goals!

I am very lucky that I was chosen as the Energizer ® Keep Going ® Blogger for this years San Diego walk.  By representing them, they donated the full $2300.00 on my behalf!  This makes my own personal fund raising a lot less stressful…but not any less important.

Susan. G. Komen for the Cure ® entire mission is to raise money and awareness for breast cancer and it’s treatments.  So, just because I don’t have to fund raise, doesn’t mean I don’t have to fund raise.  Understand?  And because I’m walking with my best friend since high school (Hi Mindy!) and she doesn’t have an amazing sponsor, I’m fund raising for her.

With that being said, don’t forget that I am selling ribbons!

3day fundraiserclick me!

You can donate a minimum of $5.00 and I will write a name on a ribbon and wear it on my shirt during the 3-day for the Cure walk. I am doing this to remind myself of who is fighting this disease!  Click on the button above and you will be taken to my page with instructions on how to buy a ribbon.

August 21st Rummage Sale!

On the 21st we (Mindy & I) will be hosting a rummage sale at my house in Ramona.  We will have an ad in the Ramona Sentinel paper.  If you live in the area and would like the address, just contact me and I’ll be happy to share the location.  I just don’t feel it’s a good idea to post my address in this post.  But if you are my friend in the area, I would love for you to stop by!

August 28th Table at the Ramona Albertsons

We will have a table set up at the Starbucks entrance of the store.  We will be selling t-shirts (my own design!), cute pink ribbon items, Partylite candles and baked goods!   Of course, we’ll be accepting monetary donations as well if none of our items float your boat.  Here is my t-shirt design:

I’m really excited about these upcoming fund raisers.  I hope we can raise a good amount towards Mindy’s $2300.00 goal!  Please, if you live in the Ramona area, come visit us!  You can meet the Keep Going ® blogger for San Diego and support a fantastic organization!

If I’m Going to Walk the Walk

I had my final post-pardum doctor appointment last week (from my final surrogacy).  I had an interesting conversation with my doctor that I thought I would share.

We were talking about my walking in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure® walk in November.  Now my doctor is very laid back and not prone to excitement.  So when he lit up and started ranting about the changes in health insurance, I paid attention.

He explained the changes in policy relating to mammograms.  Apparently, under the new health plan, women won’t be covered for mammograms until they are 50 years old.  He explained that by this age, the cure rate is drastically decreased and a woman’s prognosis is much worse than if she was screened and a potential cancer was caught earlier.  Please note:  This is my doctors educated opinion that I am sharing.  Please consult your own doctor if you have questions!

The entire conversation made me laugh.  Just to see how passionate my OBGYN was about this topic made me pause and think about it.  I actually came home and tried to research the “Obama Care” policy so that I could blog about it and share it with you.  Honestly, it made my head spin!  I could not find the health care plan explained in plain English.  Everything was either governmental speak or opinion.  I was able to find an article at www.Komen.org that helped explain early mammography screenings that was a little easier to understand.  Basically it says this:

Mammography in women 40 to 49 saves lives.

Yeah, that was enough for me!

I’m not even 40 yet (just a few very short years to go).  But my doctor recommended that I go ahead and get screened…while I still can.  Otherwise, it will be 12 years before I can have the test again.  I decided that since I will be walking The 3-Day walk and devoting the next 17 weeks to promoting treatment and prevention of breast cancer, then I ought to do what I need to do to keep myself healthy as well.

If you are in your 40′s (or like me, very close) I encourage you to talk to you doctor and see if a mammogram might be a good idea for you, too.  My appointment is August 10th and I’ll be back to tell you how it went.
