Wordless Wednesday ~ Game Ball

Sorry, there is a little story to go with this, so it’s not completely “wordless.”  Hope you don’t mind.

Anyhow, Mr. A. has not been real thrilled with his baseball playing experience this year.  He is easily discouraged and has wanted to give up several times.  I see him struggling and am always surprised;  I just kinda figured this tall, strapping, bright young man would be naturally athletic.

He’s not.

So this week, when his coach awarded him the Game Ball after Sunday’s game, we were both extremely proud.

He just grinned ear to ear.  I felt bad because I wasn’t even paying attention…it was the last thing I expected.  So I asked him to tell me what the coach had said.  He told me:  “I got this ball for playing real good today and hitting the ball and stuff like that.”

Spoken like a true Hall of Famer.

He Wants to Quit Baseball

antMr. A. has been a baseball player for four weeks.  He is already wanting to call it quits!

He plays ball on Sunday’s and has practice on Monday’s.  This past Monday he was goofing off and not listening to the coach.  Coach made him run laps!  You see, Mr. A. has a problem with using his ears (don’t all 5 year olds?).  He is this way at home and it’s carrying over into baseball, too.

After practice on Monday, he declared “pull me out of baseball, mom.  I don’t want to play anymore.”

When I asked him “why?”  he told me “because it’s too hard!  All I do is stand out there and be hot.”

On this day, he was miffed that he was forced to run laps, but it wasn’t the first time he had asked me to pull him out of baseball.

He’s so cute in his uniform!  There is nothing more adorable than watching a field full of 5 year olds chasing after balls and running bases.

So what would you do? I don’t want him to think that just because something is a little “hard” that he can/should quit.  On the other hand, I told him at the beginning that if he ever didn’t like playing anymore that he could quit.  I don’t want to be one of those parents obsessed with their boys excelling in sports, and I wouldn’t force him to play.

I’m at a crossroads here and I’m not sure which value is the better one to teach.  I don’t really want him quitting.  He generally seems to enjoy playing…when he’s not getting into trouble.

I don’t want to force it on him either.

*sigh*

Opening Day for Winter Ball

Today was Mr. A’s first day of playing baseball!  OMGosh!  Can you say A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.??  Ten little 5 (ish) year olds out running around trying to catch the ball and make it to base.  The cutest thing ever.

1stBaseballredteamThese are the only half way decent pictures we got.  I was stuck keeping score (more on that in a moment) and Bob had the camera.  I don’t really know what he was thinking, but he didn’t get anything better.  The only video he got was of Anthony standing at 3rd base doing nothing, and then a different little boy batting (maybe he thought he was taping Ant?).  I don’t know.  But these are cute and I hope to get some more next week to share.

Now, more about keeping score.

When you fill out the registration forms to sign your kids up for ball, it asks if you would be willing to volunteer.  I checked the “team mom” box and the “scorekeeper” box.  I thought, “sure, I could help out.”

Then I get the email saying “Thanks for being the scorekeeper!”

HUH?

I seem to remember keeping score for my high school boyfriends softball team…20 years ago.  I show up today and the coach hands me the score book.  I ask if I am keeping track of the whole game or just our team.  Another mom said “Just our team.”

Okay.  I can do this.  I seem to remember drawing lines around the bases to keep track of where everyone was, but that was about the extent of my memory.  Then factor in that this is T-ball.  They kinda just do whatever and everybody gets to hit.  The last batter comes up and whoever is on base gets to run around to home.

My head was spinning and I was coloring in bases for our boys and girls.  I thought I did an “ok” job keeping track.

Then someone asked me who won.

I have no idea!

Was I supposed to keep track for everyone?

*ugh*

After the game, I turned in the book to the snack bar.  I’m wondering if they have ever fired a scorekeeper?  I might be the first!
