Training Continued

We are 5 weeks out from the San Diego Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure walk.  FIVE WEEKS PEOPLE!  Holy cow, where has the time gone?  This weekend they are walking in Philadelphia (Go Philly!).  Things are just buzzing right along but I feel lost and left out.

Having a broken foot sucks.

I was so happy when my orthopedist told me I could continue training.  As long as I don’t have pain, and I wore my boot, then I could Keep Going®. I started out small,  it felt as if I was new again.  One mile.  Then one and a half.  Testing out my foot.  All seemed {mostly} well.

However, walking long distances in a boot/walking cast brings on an entire new set of problems that I didn’t expect.

First,  I’m uneven.  Around the house, I have taken to wearing a flip flop with a thick sole so that I can walk evenly and without a limp.  The boot is very big and I have stand with my other foot on tip toe to be balanced.  Unfortunately, my super fantastic, very supportive, perfect for a 60 mile trek, New Balance 846‘s do not have a real thick sole.  So I limp on my training walks.  I have an uneven gate.  Because of this, my hip really hurts.

Second,  my boot doesn’t have cushioning in it.  So while my foot is immobile from flexing and the bone is healing, the bottoms of my feet hurt after only a 3 mile training walk.  I mean, face it, these walking casts aren’t really made for long distance walking.

I’m not naturally athletic, so this is all very discouraging for me.  It’s hard to want to go on a training walk when I know I’m going to be in so much pain after.  And then I get annoyed with myself, because for goodness sake…it’s not chemo!  Things could be so much more worse, why do I have to be such a baby?

This week I’ve gone on two 2.5 mile walks.  According to the training guide, this weekend we should be covering 18 miles!  I sure hope other ladies are getting further than I am.

I just tell myself:  I will be at the San Diego walk.  I will walk.  I will walk.  I will walk.  Dammit, boot and all!

Walking and Fundraising and Walking, oh My!

Quick Recap in case you missed it:  I have a mysterious pain in my right foot.  It’s the top of my foot, in line with my big toe.  All indicators suggest a stress fracture, but my doctor took X-rays and told me it’s “fine.”  So I spent about 10 days off of it “resting” and I now have a handy prescription for Motrin.

Fast forward to this week.  Motrin doesn’t do squat for the pain in my foot and it’s not going away.

This is where I really want to curse, but I’ll spare you.  You’re welcome.

It’s so frustrating to have something hurt and have no answers.

In any case, I’ve started walking again this week.  I’ve kept it short and have been walking at our high school track so that I am near my car “just in case.”

It feels really good to be out walking!

I love to go out without the kids and have grown up time with my walking buddies.  It’s even fun to just be alone.  After spending the day with children following me around, it’s nice not to be needed for a bit.  I’ve really come to enjoy my walks and I so wish I could go further without having issues.  The San Diego 3 Day for the Cure is only 11 weeks away!  I don’t have time to be dilly-dallying around now.

Anthony’s homeschool program has a weekly community class that happens every Tuesday.  I found out yesterday that I will have 3 hours to myself every Tuesday!  Isn’t that sweet?  And do you know what I’m going to do with my free time?  Why, walk.  Of course.  If anyone lives in the Santee, CA area and are free to walk on Tuesday mornings, let me know!  I could use the company.

Fundraising

It’s going good.  We had a Rubio’s dinner on the 1st.  I am still waiting for the grand total.  I’ll have a post all about it as soon as they post our totals.  If you are looking for another fund raiser for your own walk, check them out.  It’s a great program and it doesn’t take any effort at all to pull it off.

This Friday, we will be having BINGO for BOOBIES.  I’m way excited about this.  I have several companies that have sponsored prizes and supplies for the event.  I think it will be great and we have at least 30 people that will be attending (hopefully I’ll find more as I track down RSVP’s).  Stay tuned for that!

Anybody have other good fund raising ideas?  My brain is thinking about the upcoming Halloween holiday and ways to incorporate a fund raiser in there…

Maybe a ghoulish spaghetti and meatball dinner?

hhhmmmm…..

99 Day Countdown to the San Diego Walk

99 days or 14 weeks.  This is all that I have left to get my bootie in shape for the San Diego Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure ® walk.  The time is just flying by and I know it will be here in a blink.  If you are participating in this years walk, here is what our training schedule looks like this week:

Monday Rest
Tuesday 3 miles Easy walking
Wednesday 30 mins Moderate cross-training
Thursday 5 miles Moderate walking
Friday 30 minutes Easy cross-training
Saturday 10 miles Easy walking
Sunday 6 miles Easy walking

How exciting is that?! We are up to 10 mile training walks!  I don’t think I’ve ever voluntarily walked 10 miles in my life and I will attempt my first one Sunday night.

For the first time this week, I used the Training Walk finder in my 3 Day participant center to find a group to walk with.  I have to say that this was the best decision I have made!  So far I’ve been mostly alone walking around my town.  Occasionally, my friend comes with me and once I had a fellow participating walker join me.  But now that my walks are getting longer, my friend isn’t coming and I can’t always coordinate schedules with the other local walkers.

Driving about 45 minutes “down the hill” was a great plan to meet up with some new friends.  I found a walk that was being held in Santee, CA by a group called “Boob Camp Beckie.”  It was a 5-6 mile walk.  All the ladies were very nice, most of them already knew each other but there was me and one other lady who were newbies.  The walk started just after 6pm and the group of ladies (and two gents) took off.

Literally…they took off.  I was being passed left and right and being left in their collective dust.  I didn’t realize just how slow I am!

Thank goodness, the training walk leader, Jeri stayed with me.  I think that’s probably her “job;” not leave anyone behind.  Eventually we caught up to a really great married couple (I suck for not getting their names) and it was the 4 of us.  We only saw a flash of pink two other times the entire walk.  The other group booked it.

I learned a couple lessons on this training walk:

  1. I need to walk faster.
  2. My backpack needs more decorations!
  3. I need a blinkie light since we were walking in the dark.
  4. I need to walk faster.

My 3 new friends were a wealth of knowledge.  I loved hearing stories of past walks and I tucked little tidbits away for future reference.

If you are trying to train for the 3-Day for the Cure walk…JOIN A TRAINING WALK! I can’t say that enough.  It was so much more fun than trudging around town by myself.  You learn from their expertise about what to expect.  I’ll be checking my local schedule and plan on joining other walks in the future.
